It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
Unless you were a fan of "Miami Vice", then the old "DX 7" and its multitude of patches was tops but that was longer ago than some of our posters!! Lol....
Conversely, a 15 year old board with limited sample memory, mono samples, and a very basic DSP may not appear terribly impressive on paper (especially when compared to the latest and greatest instruments), yet can still be very enjoyable to play.
That's very true. One of the boards I still use a lot is a Casio PX-500L from, I think, 2003. "Obectively" the flaws are obvious... most notably that quiet velocities are kind of "backwards" -- instead of losing brightness relative to high velocities, they lose bottom! But it has a nice tone overall, and works fine in a rock band context. It is strong in that elusive "finger to ear connection" quality which doesn't appear on any spec sheet. I enjoy playing it, and to me, it sounds pleasing in a band context, even if not "authentic" in its dynamic tonal response. Meanwhile, years later, I intended to replace it with the PX-330, which was much better "on paper" and which did not have the flaw I mentioned... but I didn't enjoy playing it nearly as much, and sent it back. (And surprisingly, it was weaker in some of its other sounds besides, like Rhodes.)
You can have all the technological resources and engineering wizardry in the world at your disposal, but this does not guarantee that a given sound will be universally appreciated or musically inspiring.
The DX7 EP patches are too sugary and have been way overused IMO. But it launched FM (really phase modulation) synthesis into the world, and with some filtering and alias control it can be quite an interesting source of dissonant (non-harmonically related) timbers one can't easily generate via other means. It was a new pure synth, back when Yamaha was still doing that sort of thing. It was one of the best selling synths ever, and to this day most DPs have a DX EP patch. The patents are a fascinating read if you are into synthesis.
On that topic of old and new I was quite amazed at some of the sounds in this video, for an old instrument it sounds nicer compared to a lot of the newer models out there today (IMHO) even if I can only tell so much it coming through a youtube vid and all that. I like the Rhodes sound on it.
I'll not get into the politics behind it but read the description for yourself, quite interesting, though I have no idea if it is all true, being the internet and all that, but corporate games like that don't surprise me one bit if that did happen

Selftaught since June 2014. Books: Barratt classic piano course bk 1,2,3. Humphries Piano handbook, various... Kawai CA78, Casio AP450 & software pianos. 12x ABF recitals. My struggles: https://soundcloud.com/alexander-borro
I would still own and play a GEM piano today if the darn thing hadn't crapped out on me! They were way ahead of their time and sounded great. However, I wasn't too impressed with the action (you can sense a bot of a struggle going on in the video from time to time), and reliability was definitely an issue.

After a month with an MP11 I still don't find it realistic, but it is practical. When choosing to buy a keyboard I think of it as digital cameras: buy a good lens and it will last long time, buy a good body and it will be worthless in a few years. On a DP a good keyboard is the lens and the sound engine the body.
Saludos.
