Hi, I am not sure what to do if a piece has the following....
(its 'little brown jug' p119 of Alfreds Adult all in one)

It has a double bar half way through and at the end it has a Repeat indication. Do you repeat from the beginning as normal or only back to the double bar sign ?

Repeat from the beginning and play to the end, that's what it means. The double bars half way through mean that there will be a change in the song after the bars (of dynamic, etc).

Thanks, I wanted to be sure rather than guess.

Same question for Marine's Hymn on p.115

I see two lines (four bars each) and the dotted part is at the end of the first line.

Just playing by ear, I feel that I should play (line 1, line 2, line 1)
Is that right for the "repeat" notation?

Line 1, Line 1, Line 2, Line 1

OK, I guess the dots at line 1 tell me to repeat that. Where does it show that I should go back and do just line 1 after the end of line 2?

(I know that sounds right musically, but I want to learn the notation) Thanks.

There is a "D.C. al Fine" sign at the end of line 2, and it means that you should repeat from the beginning and play to the "end" (called "fine"); there is a "fine" sign at the end of line 1, so the whole thing means that after line 2, repeat the song up to line 1.

(This thing was explained in an earlier song in the book, called Standing in the need of prayer.)

I'm glad I could help. And yes, you do need to actually "read" the book, in addition to playing it; smile that's how you'll pick up the subtle explanations and details that are sometimes provided at the end of some songs.
