Has anybody tried Starbond CA glue on loose pinblocks? I usually use Hot Stuff but gave Starbond a try. Well, I have two pianos that it worked marginally for a while, but some pins now don't hold at all. I'll be giving them another dose and really can't say for sure the glue was the problem because of the harsh winter, but I suspect it may be.

I have only used the Hot Stuff so I can't help with that.
However, I have had different results more based on how I used it.
Sometimes I just drip it at the base of the pin and let it soak, other times I spin the pin out, swab the hole and drive the pin back in.
For the latter it tends to last longer but not feel as tight is I would like and the pin can become a bit snappy, and the former it feels tighter and sometimes needs more.
I dont have the weather issues that you have as I live in California, a state that global warming seems to be focused right now.

My guess is that the glue did not penetrate properly. I really think that unless the glue is very thin and applied horizontally with a very fine applicator and with a lot of patience then the glue is not penetrating very far into the pinblock if at all. When applied directly into the pin hole, as Gene said, I seem to get the similar results with any brand or thickness of glue. Even the gel-types work well and are in fact easier to control.

If a previously treated pin is loose again from an external application, I would think that a followup treatment will be ineffective because the passageways have been blocked with dried glue.

Thanks, guys. But if you are taking out the pin, why not put in a bigger one? That may be my next step.

I have re-treated pinblocks with Hot Stuff and it improved the situation. I just tried it with Starbond and it didn't seem to. I think I'll go back to Hot Stuff.
