For those who do not know, Eleanor Sokoloff has the longest tenure as a piano teacher at Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. She has been teaching there since the 1930's!!

She has now turned 100 and Hugh Sung recently interviewed her. What a cool glimpse of one of the world's fine teachers.

Ep. 11: Interview with Eleanor Sokoloff, Part 1

Also, please let me know if this becomes tiring. We are just having so much fun doing this series.

Fantastic interview! Wow. She is so on her game, it's incredible watching and listening to her. I would love to have a lesson with her!

My dad, who is now 88, went to Curtis in the early 40s as a teenager. I just called him, and he said he doesn't remember her. He had a different piano teacher. But they were there at the same time : )

Thanks very much for posting this! I'm sending a link to my dad so he can see it too.

Peakly,

Ask your Dad about Vladimir Sokoloff. He was the staff accompanist and Mrs. Sokoloff's husband. I understand EVERYBODY knew him.

Hi Rich, I just got off the phone with him. My mom and dad watched the video on Sunday and loved it!

As I said, my dad is 88, and went to Curtis when he was 17. But he was only there for about a year because the war came, and he enlisted in the navy rather than be drafted. After the war he was a music major at Drake University in Iowa, where he met my mom, another pianist and music major. Dad said he does not remember Vladimir Sokoloff, Eleanor's husband. He probably encountered him while he was there, but he told me it was such a long time ago he just can't remember.

About twenty years ago, my mom and dad went back to Philadelphia, and they visited Curtis. The staff were really nice to them, and gave them a tour and showed them around. Dad loved seeing it again.

They both thought Eleanor Sokoloff was great! But how could you not? What a great interview. We're all looking forward to part two. Thanks again for posting it!

Hugh, everyone I've showed the video to agreed that you did a great job with it. The way you talk with her shows how much you like and respect her. We're all looking forward to part two!
