I got this new digital so I can practice when my stepson is sleeping all day (he works graveyard). I was kinda counting on just using headphones but how do you turn off the speakers? I never had a keyboard where this wasn't automatic.

The directions say to use one port and put a "plug" in the other to turn off the speakers, and I have no shortage of patch cords and instrument cords but nothing worked. Plus I got only one side of the mix.

Is something else meant by "plug"?

I did trying searching here but came up with no threads with 105 in it, which I thought would be a slam dunk.

I have the P-105 and I plug headphones in and the sound from the speakers is terminated. This is with only one set plugged in and the other jack empty. Note the manual says "either jack".

You are using the headphone jacks in the front of the unit right?

I think you`ll find somewhere on the menus that turn off is optional. This is the case with my DGX; so you can use the headphone outlet as a line out to another amplifier whilst retaining the onboard speakers as a kind of monitor.

Some might find this a useful feature. But I`m sure you`ll be able to kno9ck it off like I can.

This does not sound correct. Maybe for the DGX though. Are you confusing it with 'local control'. The P105 has a line out that is live with headphones plugged in so this is not needed. I don't have a P105 but suspect the OP's one is defective.

As for DGX, you are both right. Peterws is talking about Speakers Control, you about Midi Control, both available in DGX650, controlled via menu. I ocasionally use both.
Unfortunately for OP , P105 does not have speakers control, I also think that this unit is defective.

Which suggests that your headphones are plugged into an "Aux Out" jack (= "Line Out") on the back, instead of the "Phones" jack on the front, under the keys.

What Charles says, to me it sounds like you are using one of the Aux out at the rear, and not the headphones out at the front since you are getting only one side.

The manual say this

Quote:

Since this instrument is equipped with two [PHONES] jacks, you can connect two sets of stan- dard stereo headphones. If you are using only one set of headphones, insert a plug into either jack, shutting off the speakers

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/431476/Yamaha-P-105.html?page=7#manual

I think you are misinterpreting the manual. what I highlighted in bold is not what the manual says, it doesn't say anything about using another plug to shut off speakers but it will do this for you automatically when using either one of the headphone outputs.

D'oh....I was in such a hurry, ripping it out of the box and setting it up, I didn't see the ports in front and was using the rear jacks instead.. blush

Then I lost my cell phone, had the service turned off and then found it under the bed. Whutta day.

Thanks everyone.
