Dear Teachers

I read many posts by teachers that you disinfect piano keys between sessions. However there were no details on how it was done. I read that to clean keys usually damp soft cloth is recommended, but that is not disinfection. So how do you disinfect piano keys - plastic and ivory keys?

I have newer piano so I think they are plastic, but also just curious about ivory as well.

Thank you
PGretto

I use windex, or a variant on it, applied to a paper towel to wipe down the keys. Windex has both ammonium and soap, so it cleans the hand oils and provides some hygienic value as well. I would only use this on plastic keys, not ivories.

I use Clorox disinfecting wipes, followed by a damp (with water) towel, and then a dry towel. My teaching piano's keytops are plastic, and I haven't tried the Clorox wipes on Ivory.

BTW I don't clean between every lesson. Just regular cleaning plus whenever a student seems ill or sneezes on the keyboard etc.
