In my imagination , old world sound is something deep. Like effortless deep. The piano plays itself. I just heard the term from some teacher and was very fascinated by it.

The 2005 A will be in June. The owner is out.

The CC's action WAS rebuilt.

I don't want to brag, but I think my vintage Mason has that "old world" sound you talk about. If you want to take a listen to it, go to the current ABF Quarterly Recital #38 and listen to #14 the 2nd movement of the Ravel Sonatine.

My piano was fully rebuilt just prior to 1999 when I bought it. But the action has a broken in feel that simply begs you to play. I love my piano, so I am biased. But it has been played by lots of good pianists who have also liked it very much.

You ARE bragging and I'm all green!

I'm not entirely oriented with this forum, can you point to me the exact path to the quarterly recital?

And what does "fully" rebuilt mean? That shouldn't include the soundboard right?

Found your recital. It sounds nice. I have to play in person to hear/feel the tone though.

Yes, new soundboard. Some parts of the action are original. New shanks and Renner blue hammers. I honestly don't know the names of all the parts, so can't tell you exactly the new parts of the action. Original case, plate and tension resonator.

Despite all the hype from dealers and some on this forum, a lot of new pianos are pretty underwhelming. A lot of new pianos that don't approach what a vintage M&H *can* be.

But for these old pianos to perform like we want, it can take a lot of work from a high level rebuilder. Most of the awesome examples I've seen have had a lot of work... over 10k worth. Sometimes well over.

Another 2 cents worth of my opinion: there are some brand new pianos that are stunning.

Seen the CC today. It sounds nice, not as stunning as the A I've seen earlier, but still better than my own miserable no character Kawai upright. I have not seen any new pianos sound like this. It seems it's clearer that I'm getting an old piano.....

My favorites are: Fazioli, Shigeru, Steingraeber, and the occasional Bosendorfer (they vary a lot IHMO, but one you connect with is golden). But none of this is new information, just look at the top box on the Piano Buyer's chart.

I've found that a lot of brand new pianos on the floor sound muted and lack dynamic range. If they're "new" but have been out on the floor for a year or two, the sound really opens up as the piano is broken in! And prep makes a difference, too. I would keep an open mind and evaluate each piano individually. smile
