This topic comes up occasionally, and I have no idea of the answer:

. . . How long does it take a DP to physically wear out?

I'm not talking about becoming obsolete -- that's a function of how the market develops, and how one's taste changes.

But for the people who have actually used a DP long enough so it didn't work reliably any more, or the key action changed because of hundreds or thousands of hours of playing:

. . . What did you have?

. . . How long (in years, or hours of play) did it last?

Thanks --
. Charles

As an example, there is a music school here in Edmonton that is still using a fleet of HP-237's every day.

They were manufactured around the turn of the century (1999-2000) and are still going strong.

That's a testament to a quality instrument. 15 years of being beat on by kids and adults in music lessons.

How long a piano lasts is meaningful only if we get an understanding of "lasts".

Surely "lasts" is more than just the time-to-first-failure. And it's probably less than the time until termites reduce it to a pile of dust. But the span between those extremes is large. And it's partly allied, Charles, with your notion of how one's tastes change ... in particular, how many repairs will I tolerate before I throw my hands up (and my piano out)? It also depends (most?) especially on the amount of use.

Jay, how many repairs were done on those HP's? My piano had a key failure attributed to debris under one contact pad ... a warranty repair after about 18 months. And another, similar failure after 3 years. And a failed contact pad after 6 years ... which led me to replace a set of 4 contact strips. I'm not happy, yet I'm not ready to ditch this piano. But maybe someone else would?

The keys must be lubricated occasionally. That's been done twice in 7 years. Perhaps a heavily used institutional piano would need more ... and might even need some key replacements. At what point might the owner call it quits and replace that piano?

My conclusion is: Too many variables, and too little (or no) data. More precisely: no conclusion at all.

It depends on brand and model... There is no such thing as a general DP.

And then there is also things like playstyle, environment (dust humidity) and transport for giging that have a huge impact on the state of a DP..

But when you buy a high quallity DP, its save to say atleast 10 years, and the keybed that wears most is very servicable in most cases
Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you gonna get. Make sure to enjoy every one of them, because that flavour might never return.

There was another thread that asked this question recently, and I posted my own experience there. I know I had my previous DP for 21 years, but it's hard for me to say how much I played it. I'm not a serious pianist, and there were periods when I played a lot, and others when I didn't play much. I would guess though that I averaged about 15-20 minutes a day. I suppose if I had played a lot more the felt would have worn out faster, and the piano wouldn't have lasted as long.
