For me, Practiceopedia has been excellent. Highly recommended. It's very user-friendly and practical. No more mindless practice just for the sake of practice. The focus of the book is to help you practice more efficiently so that you're getting results from your practice.

I also have the companion book for teachers "The Practice Revolution" because I wanted to understand more of the philosophy behind it. And I also use the Scales Bootcamp and Rhythm Bootcamp by the same author which I found to also be very useful.

The Rhythm Bootcamp exercises helped my sight-reading. Fast changing notes and rests used to be like running into a brick wall. In addition, my hand coordination and hand independence is better. One really fun side benefit, I now sound pretty good on a set of drums!

The approach of the book is to separate the rhythm from the music and work on it separately, so when you get back to reading music, the rhythm comes more naturally while playing.

It's a beginner book so it only goes up to 1/8 notes plus basic time signatures of 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 3/8 and 6/8. There's supposed to be a 2nd book coming out in the future.

For rhythm training I have "The Rhythm Bible" by Dan Fox which I find very useful in combination with a rhythm app.

Surprisingly easy, barely an inconvenience.

I use Rhythm Master on an android tablet - there are a few others but I liked this one as you have to pass levels before going on so there is no cheating or self delusion.

I thought Practiceopedia was cute: lots of pictures, small blocks of text, and an easy read. I read through it and sent it to my niece who was a young teen violin student at the time.

I have Practiceopedia. My daughters, who are learning piano, liked browsing through it. By reading it, my daughters gained a better understanding of how to practise. It got the point across of why they have to be mindful when they're practising. There are also some tips here and there that they gained.

I tried looking Practiceopedia up on Amazon and found it for $40. There was also a book called "The Piano Students Guide to Effective Practice" for $7. I expect that Practicopedia is much better based on the "You get what you pay for" theory but does anybody know if the second book is worthwhile?

A lack of talent does not stop you from learning piano. It just takes longer and you have to work harder.

You can see a bunch of sample pages of Practiceopedia on Johnston's web site. Take a look and see if you like the style.
