Hello,

I am a fairly experienced pianist, in that I completed all 8 ABRSM grades (for what it's worth). At my 'peak' I even managed to bash out Beethoven's 4th piano concerto back when I was a student. However since then I haven't played for around 10 years.

I'm desperate to get back into playing. For the next two years I'm living in a small apartment in Germany, so a digital piano is definitely the way to go. I have no desire for any 'frills', I just want a decent action in a cabinet style. My budget is fairly restrictive - I'd say about 1500 EUR would be the most, as it would likely just be for a few years' use, after which I would probably sell it on, unless I got really attached to it.

I was very tempted by the AP460, as Casio seem quite good value in the lower end of the market. However, I also found the Kawai CA15 very attractive - largely due to the wooden key action, which I presume (I have yet to get to a showroom and test for myself) would feel much nicer than that of the Casio.

I was swinging my opinion towards the CA15, but then found out that the CA17 is due out next month. As far as I can see, only the sound engine has been upgraded (and the addition of USB, vocal assist etc, which I'm not sure I would use that much). The CA15 can now be had for around 1500 EUR, whereas the CA17 is about 1800 EUR. I wonder if it is worth stretching my budget further for the newer model?

On the ca17 the sound system ( amplification ) has been improved too, along with the sampling engine. I guess it is worth the 300 eur more. On the other side, if you already are stretching the budget beyond the threshold, ca 15 already was a good piece to settle with.

In addition to above, CA-17 has new SK-EX concert grand voice which was missing on CA-15, headphone type and surround settings (similar to the ones in CA-67/97 that are very much appreciated by several users elsewhere in this forum), and Virtual Tecnician with 7-8 parameters that can be adjusted at will (I believe CA-15 did not have VT).

Best regards
Semih

Does anyone have any thoughts on how much depreciation I should expect on one of these if I were to sell it in a couple of years time?

As for the upgraded sound, I suppose I will have to wait until the new model appears to see if it is worth the extra cash.

Myself, I have no idea, but I'm sure much will depend on how well you treat it.

No, not necessarily. If you get a DP with a decent action, you can upgrade/change the sound signal creation using a software piano, something many here swear by and many of which are top-notch and difficult to distinguish from the real thing. You can also upgrade the sound production by adding monitors and/or PA, depending on its use. My prediction is that if you get a DP with a decent action, you're likely not going to get rid of it in a few years.
