I am starting to experiment with jazz piano after 50 years of a classical background. Does anyone know of a way to set up a good percussion jazz loop? I tried the drum kits on Garageband, but they sound more rock than soft jazz. Money is an issue so can't pay a lot for downloads. Thanx!!

drum genius app is fantastic if you have iPad or iPhone, maybe it runs on other platforms I don't know.

There is stuff on youtube as well, e.g. ...

Try IReal Pro. You get 1,300 or so jazz tunes. It provides piano, drums and bass but you can silence any that you want. I play along with the bass and drums all the time. This way you are working on actual tunes. You can also adjust the tempo to your skill level, and it's quite cheap.

Ohh drum genius seems awesome. And I must be the only one without an iPad or iPhone, so I guess it won't work.
I've been using http://www.paulcarman.com/store/home.php for quite some time, but the product has been discontinued and it's quite expensive, at least compared to drum genius. But you can use it in logic as a wav file, which I guess you can't with drum genius.

You can easily use drum genius in logic - I play drum genius on the ipad and record it into logic whilst playing some bass along with it... instant backing tracks just like that.
I could turn it into little loops easily enough if I could see a point of doing that.

I make bass tracks in Biab and combine them with the Carman drum tracks in Logic.
So I guess if you have an iPad you can record the Drumgenius track in Logic with a microphone? Or is it a way to do this digitally?

You don't need a microphone, just take the headphone output of iPad/iphone and plug it into your computer interface. I would have thought that playing a bass part on a keyboard would be better than using Biab as you can play a bass line that fits with the exact groove of the drum parts, but drum genius tells you the bpm so you can probably just combine the recorded drum part with a biab bassline in just the same way you do with the Carman tracks if you want to do it that way.
The Carman tracks are really good but you only have one or 2 styles of swing to work with, drum genius has dozens of different swing grooves. And a hundred other grooves as well.

Band in a Box is the way to go. IMO an essential tool to learn to play jazz.

Seeing as all the great players didn't have it it can't really be essential. It is far too expensive for me.

Cool.
Biab bass combined with a drum sample may not be ideal, but it works pretty good for my needs. Just needs some tinkering to get it to swing.
It's a shame the Carman drums were discontinued because some of the promised future releases seemed really interesting. I even emailed and asked about it but got no response.
I own a Samsung smart phone that I got from my mother, I think it might be possible to run the app on that phone. Thanks for your reply.

I have Biab 2011.5 and the drum patches I got were really tame, I must say. Maybe there's something better out now. But to their credit they actually gave me a refund when I complained.
The 2015 version has a bass track played by Ron Carter though, but not sure that warrants a 60 bucks upgradeā€¦

sessionband app is another good one, a bit like a cut down biab but much much cheaper.

I use EZ Drummer 2 at $149 its very powerful and very easy to use. That combined with 1 or 2 of the midi libraries at $29 each should be perfect for you. I would suggest Basic Jazz to start. There are plenty of reviews and demos online. It works perfectly in Garageband and Logic I have used it with both as well as Reaper.

You can also try midi loops from Groove Monkey they have a lot of free loops available.

Beeboss, I got the Drum Genius app to work, but I can't seem to record the loop in Logic. I assume I need a cable with headphone jack on both ends and then record it as an audio track? Could it be that the app won't work until I bought the full version or something?
