I am looking for some advanced-intermediate Baroque piano pieces. Please don't suggest Bach as I am trying to branch out. Also, Mozart is not Baroque.
So far, I've played these baroque pieces:
Couperin: Les Barricades Mysteriuses
Bach: French Suite #5, Inventions #1, #4, Goldberg Variations Aria

Keep in mind that most Baroque "piano" pieces were probably written for harpsichord.

Thanks!!! smile

There's so much! Go to IMSLP.org and have a look at Byrd, Purcell or Scarlatti, for instance (just three personal favourites).

There is a lot indeed. Do have a look at Händel's suites as well, there are some really nice pieces in there.

Any suggestions though? I really want to stay away from pieces with multiple movements or something that, like suites. That it was of the reasons why I love Couperin, he has countless solo, single pieces. Byrd is a Renaissance composer, which I don't really enjoy. Baroque only please. Thanks for your help so far! smile

Then try Scarlatti: loads of single pieces.

Hmmm, I didn't like it. Does anyone have any suggestions for individual pieces?

JP Rameau:

Pieces de Clavecin.

Gavotte and 6 variations

Le Rappel de Oiseux

Among others. There is also a famous Rondeau that's about the same or a little easier than Bach's Magadalena Pieces.

Telemann has some pieces for harpsichord that have been published for piano.

In addition to the nice suggestions already made, there are some shorter sonatas (think the same length/structure as Scarlatti) by Antonio Soler.

Rameau: La Poule, Les Sauvages

Look carefully at the Gavotte with Six Doubles, already mentioned. It's beautiful.

Couperin: Le Tic-Toc-Choc

Some of the mods might want to move this thread in pianist corner. That is the place were OP will get more answers.

Scarlatti is rich pickings for any keyboardist - pianist or otherwise wink .

Here are some of my favorites, which BTW, I've posted before in Pianist Corner:
Kk 332 in A
Kk 380 in E
Kk 27 in B minor
Kk 141 in D minor
Kk 87 in B minor
Kk 466 in F minor
Kk 9 in D minor (Pastorale)

And another tasty morsel of Couperin: Les moissoneurs.

And don't forget Handel's famous "Harmonious Blacksmith" (Aria & variations from Suite No.5 in E) and another Aria & Variations from Suite No.1 in B flat, which Brahms used for his 'Variations & Fugue on a theme of Handel'.

I'd look at the transitional composers who actually had early pianos to play. Try CPE Bach and his contemporaries. Clementi comes to mind, especially the Sonatas and the Sonatinas. If you are really looking for the rich counterpoint and not the period, look at Neo-baroque pieces by Mendelsohn, D'Indy, etc. Often they write baroque suites but in a modern style. Also look at the Buxtehude suites. Pachelbel's variation on the Magnificat is also lovely, although it is usually better on organ.

Seiler 206, Chickering 145, Estey 2 manual reed organ, Fudge clavichord, Zuckerman single harpsichord, Technics P-30, Roland RD-100.

What I would give for a harpsichord.

Anyways, Thanks for all the suggestions, looks like I'm gonna be spending a lot of time on youtube listening to these.

Thanks! smile

Ok, so I chose Sonata 27 in B Minor by Scarlatti. I am finding myself stuck on measures 4-6. Anyone have any ideas on how to properly practice that part? Its a very strange pattern without any consistencies.

This question is more appropriate for the "pianist corner" section of this forum. You will get many more answers there.

What is the problem you're finding with those measures?

They're the easiest part of the piece - I hope you know that you have to cross your LH over your RH (which keeps playing the accompaniment, and stays in the same position) to play the top notes, then back down again to play the bass notes.

BTW, better to ask such questions in Pianist Corner, as that's the place to discuss musical/technical matters about piano playing and repertoire......

Ahhhh, I'm sorry, I meant measures 11-20, it's not really clear which part is played with the left hand and which part with the right.
