Way back, I commented, and had no discussion takers . . .

I wonder if everybody will be doing the "standard" Siloti version of THE [Tchaik 1] concerto, or has the "original" version started taking over?

http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/gallery/2015/mar/09/real-tchaikovsky/

Frankly, I think the cut mentioned is justified. I like the tackey grand pause in the finale. Rolled chords in opening do make sense.

_______________

Well, so far no.

I don't know. It still seems to me that they might not award 1st prize.

Maybe Geniusas 2nd and a tie between Li-Kharitonov for 3rd place.

BTW, I wish Kharitonov to win.

But with Tch 1 and Liszt 1 he has to do exceptionally fine.

Almost the entire poll article was in Russian when I saw it. I had to have the Chrome browser translate it for me.

At the time Geniusas had around 240 and Li was way down (which I felt reflected a page that was in Russian). Today someone posted the English version of the poll, which had quite changed results after Li's concerto performance (and these will change again after Geniusas').

By the way, I'd be curious to know what Mahler thought of it - after all, he conducted it at some point with the composer at the piano. A concert I'd love to have attended! Heh.

Mahler never suffered fools gladly. He wouldn't have lavished so much - if any - attention on it (which was much appreciated by the composer/pianist) if he didn't think much of it.
Rach: "According to Mahler, every detail of the score is important."

I'm guessing 1-6, Geniusas, Li, Kharitonov, Masleev, Redkin, Debargue.

Debargue is a real wild card.

Could be Li comes in 4th, and you know what they say . . . the winner should be the one in 4th.

I think I'd rather agree with that assumption. Would absolutely be interesting to know if Mahler gave any feedback/opinions on the piece, orchestration and whatnot, to the composer. But perhaps we'll never quite know.

Do you guys think Daniil Trifonov would have won the competition, if he was contesting this time? If not, what would his place be?

Re: Cliburn I heard him upon his return from Moscow, with Kiril Kondrashin at Lewisohn Stadium. In my humble opinion, I preferred Van's Tchaik. 1 to all thus far in this competition. And as I've revisited his performance on video and on my RCA disk, I still feel the same.

Hey Everyone,

Really enjoying the competition, and this thread with all the insights and live comments is a great addition!

A small, almost insignificant observations: Debargue played on the Yamaha for the first two rounds yet switched to the S&S for the final. Do all candidates have to play on the same piano for the final round? Or can one think of a reason why the piano was not suitable for today's larger scale concerti?

In the end it mattered really little as he could play with style on either.

Cheers,
C

Look at what nugget of rumour/gossip I found.

--------------------

There has been plenty of speculation and conspiracy theories on Russian classical music sites.

The youngest participant, Daniil Kharitonov, is 16. Controversial, because it is being discussed whether there should not be a requirement to be at least 18, and because of the consistent rumors that he is favored by Gergiev.

Well, Sokolov was 16 when he won and Kharitonov has done some concerts with Gergiev (there are pictures of them playing together here along with a few others with Matsuev, too); ultimately, it really comes down to how he plays tomorrow. There's no way they can award him the gold medal if he cluster bombs his concerti!

Aren't you supposed to hear the remaining two finalists first, Mr. Forum Jury Man?
