FWIW, I've put many hours of recording on mine so far, recording vocal ensemble and instruments, and have no issues with balance whatsoever, in any mode.

Right. It sounds like most H2s are OK- it's not a design flaw, a matter of how many hours it's been used, or related to what material is being recorded, just variability among multiple low-cost parts. I think the H2 is a super cool little gadget and am eager to have one that is working properly.

I was reading online about how you can even take 4-track surround recordings from the H2 and encode them to Dolby Digital using free tools like ffmpeg to author your own surround sound DVDs. You can also make dts audio CDs using commercial encoders that cost under $100 (haven't heard of any free ones).

Those considering the H2 might want to check out this cool page of raw recordings made of the same nightclub act by five different portable recorders, ranging from the $200 Zoom H2 to the $1800 Sony PCM-D1.

That is a very cool website, Mark! Of course, it's hard to be objective when listening to them. I "liked" the PCM-D1 recordings the best, but maybe that's because I knew they had the $1800 price tag. But you know what? The Zoom H2 recordings more than held their own. The improvement with the PCM-D1 wasn't worth $1600 to me.

Thanks for posting the link!

Sorry to hear that, zoom h2, and welcome to the forum. smile There is a Zoom forum--you may have better luck getting the info you need from the people there.

I expect it is fried. Give it a proper burial and buy another one or perhaps the Q-3?

I agree with Carl - this H2 is likely destroyed, but you might search for a tiny fuse soldered in place near the voltage regulator (may look like a resistor); trace in from where the battery leads connect. But there probably won't be a fuse, so you've probably fried most of the ICs. Replacing surface mount components by hand isn't particularly fun, even in the unlikely event that you figure out exactly what you need and can find the parts. And without the factory jig for loading the initial firmware, you probably couldn't get a unit with new flash memory to function anyway. Zoom does have a repair center - call customer service and see what your options are. Might be best to just use this accident as an excuse to upgrade - many similar products have hit the market since the H2 appeared, and most look better-made.
