hey all, I've been practicing piano about a year & a half on a low end yamaha, but I've recently been looking to upgrade, I found the Yamaha ydp s52 currently on sale for £660.

This model is around the top end of my budget - £660

Though a lot more expensive on the American sites I saw...?

I listened to it played on youtube, sounds really nice to me, but unfortunately probably wont be able to go try one out, & I couldn't really find much about it online that wasn't written by yamaha, so was hoping for some opinions on the model, maybe alternative options that I could look into.

I know pretty much nothing about DP's (i picked up a little in my search but still having lots of trouble comparing models for quality & price), was hoping for some outside input from the more experienced before i commit to anything, so thank you for reading & any help you can offer!

Yamaha makes good DPS, but the real question is is it the right one for you?

I recommend going to some stores and testing out other DPs in your price range, and maybe a bit beyond, so you get a feel for what's available and have some basis for comparison. When testing, take along headphones as sometimes it's hard to hear in those stores, or they don't have them hooked up to speakers if it doesn't have on-board speakers.

If you decide to order online without trying one first, then definitely know your return policy beforehand.

A Casio PX350 (with wooden stand) is within your budget and compares well against the Yamaha. Unless there is something in the specs (sounds, connectivity, options) that favours one over the other for you, you would really have to get to a shop and try them for your self. They are both decent enough and possibly good upgrades for you.

I have the previous model, the ydp-s51 and totally enjoy it. The sound is authentic with a fine graded hammer action. It is a personal choice, so if you can try it out in a store, that would be the best. There are a lot of fine digital pianos out there. It took me a while to narrow it down to the 51, but I'm glad I did. You may be able to still find the 51 at a lower price. Hope this helps

Hi, I didn't see this one when I was looking for some reason, perhaps due to the S51/S52 transition. But youtube videos looked intriguing. Do you have any recordings by any chance?

The YDP 51/52 is superior to the PX350, better speakers, better keys and a fuller sound.

hey guys! Sorry for late reply.

So I got the YDP s52 & i absolutely love it!

I am very happy with it indeed! massive improvement on my previous DP.

The weight of the keys took some getting used to, as my previous was pretty cheapo, springy action, and in hindsight feels like a toy piano.

@ captain music - When I have a chance I'll try and get some recordings up of me butchering some music in the different piano voices, should be fun. xD

My only issue is it has one key that sounds like its hitting something inside... if i put my finger on the casing (runs the length of the piano above the keys, that bit) above that key it doesn't do it, its just a quiet thud, so i have a small weighted statue that sits above that key & its not noisy anymore. Should I be more concerned about this noise? Its not like horribly loud just louder than the rest.

Hey Tigerpaws,
Glad you got the piano. I'll try to post some sounds from my s51.
Hope you enjoy your s52. They're great pianos.
