Hi,

Can someone help me out on this? I am trying to compare which is a better piano and for the price the pianos are being sold for...

Kawai CX-5H. Is this a good piano? Where was it made? The owner is asking for C$2000. I was told it is only 10 yrs old and hardly been used. There are a few minor surface scratches. Nothing major.

Another piano is the Yamaha M1A. 24 yrs old and the asking price is C$2100. It was used for composing New Age music and has not been played for a few years.

Considering the brand, the price, and the old of these pianos, which is a better purchase?

Thanks so much.

I think both prices are high.

And I think Yamaha stopped building the M1A in the early 70's. What is the Serial Number?

The CX-5H was a very low cost upright, the most entry level piano Kawai ever has made, I think. It was built both in Japan and in the US, and you can tell this by the serial number (US production began with 'A') and and by the label on the back of the piano which says where it was built.

Hi Steve Cohen,

The Yamaha M1A serial number is: R3801311. I have not been able to find when it was made based on the serial number. Maybe I am not looking at the right site. Please advise if you have more info that can help me.

You think both prices are high. What do you think they should be at? In Canadian currency, please...

Hi KawaiDon,
Is there a website where I can find where and when the Kawai piano was made? Please advise. From your experience as well, what do you think the price for this low cost upright should be? The serial number for this Kawai piano is : A78146.

Thanks for all your help.

The Yamaha M1A was manufactured in the Hamamatsu,Japan factory in late 1983 Pretty nice piano.
The CX5H was 45" studio uprt. cabinet with a 42" strung back. Is cheesey spelled with a s or z. :p
The piano before it's discontinuence only retailed for a bit under $3.5K and was discounted on the west coast for 2.5K-3K brand new so....the asking price at 2K is no great deal. It was manufactured in the now defunct North Carolina factory. Personally I would't recommend the CX5H for any price. ;\)

I am really new to this forum. As you can tell from my name, I have never play piano before. Now, I have to buy one for my 4 yr old...

Anyway, just to clarify,

On this forum, when a piano is said to be "of a lesser of a piano" than another piano. Are you guys referring to the quality of the sound or are you referring to the quality the piano was made or both?

If I want a piano that a 4 yr old can play and practice, am I looking for a quality sound piano or one that is well built (considering there is a limited budget...and new piano is not an option).

Thanks
