My family is in search of a piano to be played by my kids. After 6 years, we figured it was time to upgrade from a keyboard to an actual piano for my 6th grade daughter. I have the opportunity at one of two pianos - free for the moving - local move. (Extra pianos at a church). One is a 1986 Baldwin Hamilton 45 inch studio (according to the tech needs about $50 worth of work - a few sticking keys and hammers). The other is a 1917 Steinway Vertegrand Model K. After looking at the Steinway, the tech said it was in remarkable condition and said I couldn't go wrong with either of them. What are the pros and cons of either of these pianos for this age of student. Normally, I would have my daughter play them both but I think it would be hard for her to envision how the Baldwin would play until after it is fixed. I am not musical in the least so I have to go by what the piano tech says.

Wow hard choices! Take them both - get rid of a bookcase somewhere to make room!

The Steinway Vertegrand is among the best upright pianos ever made; according to some sources, the best. And if you have been told that this one is in good shape, it's certainly worth considering. One of my clients had an older one than that and it was a magnificent thing. Be warned though - it is EXTREMELY heavy. It is not an ordinary upright. It's the only piano I have tried to heft the end of and it simply didn't budge - felt as if bolted to the floor.

On the other hand, 1986 is obviously fairly young for a piano and there should be lots of life in the Baldwin Hamilton. But it won't compare in sheer grandeur of sound.

You will find, I guarantee, that when you get an acoustic piano, your daughter will never touch the electronic keyboard again.
