Hi community! I play solo piano in a restaurant, and the weak spot in my repertoire is songs from older movies (e.g., As Time Goes By, Days of Wine and Roses, Shadow of Your Smile). I know musicals pretty well. Can someone suggest a book of well-arranged songs from this period, preferably w/lyrics + chord symbols above the music?

I've looked around amazon + my local music store. Problems: the compilations are (a)super simplified, boring harmonies; (b) they include lots of songs I really don't want to pay for b/c I already know how to play them (Rainbow Connection, Chariots of Fire, etc.). I've also looked at fake books, but they only have some of what I want, they don't have the songs that were only written for film. So maybe I'll just have to accept paying for a compilation that includes stuff I'm not crazy about. I ended up buying "Great American Songbook" arr. by Dan Coates, which is meh, no lyrics/chord symbols. I already own a broadway fake book + jazz standards fake book + an old illegal real book. Thoughts? Thanks everyone!

Someone over on ABF a few month back posted a fairly advanced arrangement of Over the Rainbow, and a reference to the book it came from. I wish I'd made a note of it.

One problem with movie music is that if it's written for the film, it'll usually be a work for hire, and the rights will belong to the studio. So, to do a compilation book, the editor/publisher would have to find and make deals with the various rights holders.

This book is pretty good

It has lots of tunes that were used in movies, by Gershwin, Cole Porter, etc, has lyrics, good chords, and verses for a lot of the tunes.

It's not arranged, though - just the melodies and lyrics with chord symbols.
