Just wondering...

Why can't a software based sampled piano such as Ivory II American D, or one of the other wonderful products (Garritan CFX, perhaps) or Galaxy Vintage D, be embedded into a digital piano?

It seems to me that a portable piano with Ivory II American D could be a hot seller.

I'd imagine it's because it's software that's designed to run on a modern computer running a consumer operating system. Hence you wouldn't ever be able to make a keyboard that was cost competitive because you'd essentially have to build a normal computer into the keyboard to run the sounds.

You also run into the problem that hardware production has a lengthy development cycle, so the version of the software you could include when designing the hardware may be 2 or even 3 versions out of date when the actual DP hit the shelves.

On top of that, why would hardware manufacturers (who rely on you upgrading your hardware as their income stream), decouple the upgrade path by allowing an easily upgraded VST into their hardware.

We as consumers want it because we could get the best quality piano sound at the lowest cost without requiring to upgrade hardware that we are probably happy with. However, you can see that that would result in a dramatic drop in sales after the intial uptake meaning all the DP companies would go bust.

What might happen is that one of the software companies buys a hardware company but they would soon see that a better income stream can be had by forcing consumers to upgrade hardware rather than allowing them to just upgrade the VST.

Ultimately, this is the historic difference between Microsoft and Apple and you are now seeing Microsoft start to get into hardware and subscription services where they can command a decent profit margin rather than software alone where it is now very hard to make a profit.

As DPs are a niche market, the ability to make a profit is even harder.

Best bet is still to get a cheap PC/tablet/hybrid that can run the VST you want, get the DP you want (based on key mechanism alone) and then use the DP as a controller. If that is too much effort then there are plenty of DPs out there with very decent piano patches which are, indeed, plug and play.

Embedding a computer inside a DP is easy.

Embedding a computer without PC hardware/sofware's poor reliability, slow startup time, high vulnerability to hackers -- that's a much more expensive to solve.

Which is what a Korg Kronos essentially is: It has a PC built-in running Linux.

I think, people don't care so much about reliability or startup times. They gladly accept their mobile phones crashing regularly or taking a minute to boot up.

At least the vulnerability issue can be solved easily: Just don't connect your digital synthesizer keyboard to the Internet.

For music making, whether in public or in private, reliability is in fact top of the list. If in the middle of a piece your instrument crashes....
