Anyone here play this type music? I am trying to arrange a few old "church" songs but am finding it difficult to incorporate descending runs. I've run out of ideas. I hear things I like on some recordings but don't hear well & am finding it impossible to mimic the sound. Do you know of any books on 2 finger descending runs that would be helpful? Thanks.

I don't play that genre, but I did run into a web site called "Hear and Play" that's strongly into it. You could also google "Jermaine Griggs".

I love this genre and try to play and arrange it.

I recommend the Pop Piano Book of Mark Harrison ; there are 90 pages dedicated just to gospel.

Well, there are lots of gospel videos on Youtube, I'm sure you could find some that might detail those runs. I believe many of those runs are based on pentatonic scales. Are you familiar with those? For example, if you have an Eb major chord, the Eb major pentatonic scale will fit over it well. So, do a little turn at the top and then descend:

F-G-F-Eb-C-Bb-G-F-Eb-C...

The book, the RH according to Art Tatum, while aimed at jazz, has lots of explanations of fast pentatonic based runs that I'm sure could be adapted to gospel pretty easily.

There are a few books you may be interested in seeking out; Rules For Evangelistic Improvisation, The Piano Hymnal, Adding Runs To Music all by David Smither, & Trinity House Publishing.

I have the Piano Hymnal which contains arrangements of 200 hymns with runs & fills. I don't have the other books as they are very hard to obtain. but they are on my wishlist. if you come across a source for these books let me know.

I am learning to play the piano. My main influences are Gospel, R&B and Jazz piano
