I currently have an Arius YDP-181. I have read really great information on the CLP-585. I cannot find a floor model to try out. I can find other CLP models. The primary thing that has me a little nervous on the CLP-585 is the music rest. It is totally different than the other CLP models.

How good is it? Can you put a music book on it about the size of Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Book? Or is it only able to support a page or two of music. I cannot find any good pictures of sheet music on the piano.

If you happen to have a CLP-585 could you please post some pictures of the music rest with a fairly large music book on it? Thanks.

I had a CLP-585 for a few weeks. The music rest can support a large book easily (complete Chopin Etudes, a volume of Beethoven sonatas...).

Problems may be encountered with flimsy scores made only of a few sheets, since (similar to many acoustic uprights) the music rest does not present a flat surface behind the score. The remedy is simple: cut out a rectangle of sturdy cardboard to the size needed to support the score and place it on the music rest.

Thanks a bunch! If you don't mind me asking, why did you only have it for a few weeks? Did you get something else instead?

Another solution for separate sheets is to hole punch them and put them in a 3-ring binder. But I do the cardboard thing with music that I don't want in a binder.

The music rest really shouldn't be a deciding factor either way in whether or not to purchase. Perhaps there are other Yamahas out there with the same action and/or sounds that you can test.

I finally exchanged the 585 for the NU1 (the dealer was great and refunded the full price of the 585). I was too frustrated by the touch of the 585 and preferred the feel of a real action. The NU1 has its quirks, though, and I think that the 585 actually sounds better: for me the action was just the most important thing.

I have a 585, the touch is the best touch/action you can get on a digital piano trust me, it's flawless, the ability to rapidly repeat same notes and play fast passages is superb, because of the counterweights in every key you can play soft passages of music with ease, allowing greater expression.

The music rest is excellent in my opinion, the self closing lid is even better 😉

I bet he did, like a shot! The NU1 is a looker, no doubt about that. I preferred the version with the perspex front myself. . .
