Reading the comments on YouTube. Raving about performances 10 seconds in. What is wrong with these people?

Shishkin's prelim video is good (from qualifying rounds back in April). There's a might-have-been George Li one, too.

Is it possible that when we are young we have it easier to keep concentrated and forget about the environment? This Katie Liu girl is 21 and she looked completely focused to me. She has won the audience at the youtube chat. And me too, enjoyed her performance very much.

Eric Lu will probably be one of the finalists.

When you're 17 or 18 or even 20, you know you have more opportunities still ahead of you. As you approach that dreaded competition cut-off age, the stakes become much higher.

I'm also pretty certain Eric Lu will advance.

I was hoping better from Tian Lu but the stress was too much for her.
Probably she won't advance.

Cho is clearly the best so far, IMO. He has just obviously done this more than everyone else.

You are in luck FarmGirl, the multimedia people at Chopin Competition have bucked up. Aimi's performance had just been uploaded an hour ago on youtube.

da96163, thank you.
Here's my attempt to translate the feedback of Japanse clitic (not her official one). as promised. There is more but I will do it later

Day 1 note only... I will translate the remaining next weel

Hansen, student of Henri Barda - Mentioned his very different / odd interpretation. He played with Glenn Gould like posture?? Etude 10-5 he perfomred brilliante section with super pianissimo. He got some bravo from the audience after the Balade 4 but left in haste.

Gyongyosi - very individual interpretation as well. She poses suddenly, then get twice fast. Her nocturne 55-2, two converstion lines in the right hand. was very nice

Gozdziewski - Etude 25-7, she drenched in endles emotional waves. too much indelgence in emotion. Scherzo 1 - was faster and much more pleasant to listen to.

Julian Li - performed nocturn with his interpretation as his emontion , however, his balade was put together more masculine ...

Furumi (18 years old Japanese) - she likes her concentration but wishes she added more perspectives... by highlighting interactions of 2 melody lines and / or provide more colors distinguishing soprano and base..

And with Zsa Zsa Gabor, I think. Yep, that's the one I was remembering.

Thanks, nice review. The Japanese really do love their Chopin.

OK, I keep listening for Krystian Zimerman, Arthur Rubinstein, Dinu Lipatti, and Vladimir de Pachmann (minus the false notes and erratic tempi) rolled into one. 😀

Kobayashi is fascinating, I think--must hear if that holds up. 😀

Just skimmed through the morning session.
It would not be a surprise to see ALEXIA MOUZA in the finals.

Great fun watching this with the youtube chat experts - 'too slow' 'too fast' 'no feel' 'no expression'.

To sit down and dash off op.10/4 like that was pretty impressive. Overall I didn't really respond to her playing but she did get a very good reception from the audience.

I happened to see Nao Mieno on the live stream. She was in tears before going on stage and looked an emotional wreck but got through her programme remarkably well even if op. 10/2 wobbled a bit. It was uncomfortable but compelling to watch. Her hands were visibly shaking throughout.

Before her was another Japanese girl who turned 16 about a week ago.

One of the Japanese teachers visiting there to support his student highly praised the guy who played last today at #53 Osokins? (It's tough to think of correct spelling from Japanese spellings). I will wait for video for my take. It sounded like we had many Japanese pianists performed. I heard the 16 years old Maruyama did well. So did Nakagiri and others. Another teacher commented Roman's (again, I cannot tell how to spell it. He played in the morniing after a chinese pianist Luo) magical performance of almost Ravel-like Etude 10-5. Alexiz, a Venezuelan / Greek girl was a dynamite! I cannot wait to see the video.

Xin Luo, the blind pianist (Chinese Tsujii) was the first to play yesterday and was visibly nervous. He did not performed well.

Alexia is the new Martha (because she is the only South American but half only).

The Japanese girls were okay, no Kobayashi no.2 there.

Nehring I heard did great.

Mikolajcyzk did well but the second Polish pianist Mortycynski drew a tremendous amount of criticism from the youtube chat.

And Mayaka Nakagawa in the morning wore the same dress as Mariko Nogami in the evening.

Evidence:
Mayako Nakgawa's dress https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nspSrZgmkdc&t=3h42m10s
