I doubt you'll be excluded but why not google for something like the 'best songs of...'. I'm sure you'll hear something you recognise and like.

dire tonic, that definition of "Popular" looks very good to me. Some people don't like popular music, but I guess they can always find some famous heavy rock or opera piece, etc.

Good question. Although I've heard and used the term myself for years, I've never been really sure what it meant either. Here's is excerpt from Wikipedia of what they think it is;

Pop music (a term that originally derives from an abbreviation of "popular") is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the Western world during the 1950s and 1960s, deriving from rock and roll. The terms "popular music" and "pop music" are often used interchangeably, although the former describes of music that is popular (and can include any style).

As a genre, pop music is extremely eclectic, often borrowing elements from other styles such as urban, dance, rock, Latin, and country; nonetheless, there are core elements that define pop music. Such elements include generally short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure) as well as the common employment of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and hooks.

Our description of it is a little broader. Generally, I don't think we will exclude anything post 60's. So jazz, blues and show tunes would not be exempt even though not rock based. The main theme though that we should try to keep in mind is the aspect of POPULAR.

1) Most of us will have heard the tune and will be somewhat familiar with the tune, because at one time in the last 50 years or so, it was very ... POPular.

2) Popular jazz, blues, show tunes are fine.

3) Based on all of the above, your own judgement call if it is appropriate or not. And of course, discuss in the discussion thread if you're not sure, or looking for ideas.

Now, with that said I have no clue what to play.

Andrew, in the forum many of us are more from the generation of Michael Jackson than Taylor Swift. However, out there in the world now, you probably could get a fan club by playing Swift. Anything will be good. But we can keep posting our greatest hits for fun.

I can understand you not liking the Billboard Hot 100, Red Hot Chilli Peppers or Hot Chocolate, outo, but what about Coldplay, Snow Patrol or Vanilla Ice?

I was thinking of popular songs after the GAS era, i.e. chart-toppers, there or thereabouts, 1960 - present. I'm sure as Rock 'n' Roll was born in the fifties some overlap might be permitted if someone were to throw in some Chuck Berry?

I guess by pop I'd be thinking reasonably mainstream chart music, without any great requirement to be fussy about genre.

Andrew, my 10 year old daughter and her cousin totally charmed an extended multigenerational family gathering last weekend doing Taylor Swift duets (my daughter singing, her cousin on piano), so I, so I definitely think she fits!

Ok, I think you need to know that when it comes to "popular" music genres I was always more into heavy metal or funk/house/rap...Do they count as pop?

I've gone to listen to them all, Greener, and yes, some are a bit familiar. The most famous of all is "In my life".

Believe me, post 1960 is a stretch for me, so I went to the Elvis Presley web site and picked the first two from 1960. The further away from 1960 they got the fewer I knew

My selection hit the #1 spot on the US top 100 in 1960, so I think it qualifies (just barely) - Georgia On My Mind.

I'm really not sure about my second selection. It goes kind of crazy in the middle. I like parts of it, but not all if it. So, not sure what I'll do for an arrangement. I may change this one. The other I was going to possibly try singing which is a frightening thought at the moment. Otherwise, there are likely better choices I could make for piano solo.

Oh, this is interesting. I would join in although I'm not sure how this works. Are we allowed to recommend a song for the songlist? None of the current songs are of interest to me. I'm thinking soul/funk/rock like Hall & Oates, BeeGees, etc.
