On that note.....anyone have suggestions for humidifiers/de-humidifiers for my tropicalized Grotrian-Steinweg 185? I'm in a one bedroom apt. that is large, but there is no fan/no window in the restroom, and I worry the humidity from the shower could damage the piano as it moves down the hall and into the living room....

I'd suggest a small, whole-room dehumidifier. I use one in my piano shop (part of my detached garage) and it works great! I do, however, get tired of emptying the water bucket. It'd be nice to set it on a shelf near a window and run a clear plastic tube/hose to the dehumidifier to prevent from having to empty the bucket so often.

Wishing you all the best!

Despite the number of used pianos on the market, really nice pianos are hard to find. They can be found, but you have to look high and low... I wouldn't be surprised if the potential buyer contacts you again to accept your offer. However, it sounds like you know what you are doing and really don't need our advice; but I'm glad you asked anyway. We all love a piano adventure! grin

As far as the Grotrian is concerned, do the repairs/renovations in increments as you can afford it. I can see why you want the Grotrian as your personal instrument and not used for teaching or commercial purposes. Some things are just personal to us and it's best left that way.

All the best,

Rick

The interested party did contact me today, letting me know his daughter was really in love with it, and was urging him to work something out with me. He offered me $3700 - and I accepted - more so because I know his daughter loved it, and it finding its way into a home where it is loved is the most important thing to me of all. I won't like though - I did cry a little. Something about acoustic pianos, beautifully made, with beautiful sounds, really tug at my heart strings. Perhaps this piano and I will cross paths again down the road, perhaps not, but at least it is going to a loving home. wink

I do! wink Unfortunately though, I did decide to sell - the little girl who looked at it fell in love, and I couldn't break her heart....although now mine is breaking! wink Anyhow, it would have been fun for sure to keep both and play them together, but it's possible I also would have been evicted! wink

If you need new hammers at some point, finding a voicer that knows how to prep them and what to use (Grotrian can provide them eventually pre voiced)
Will help the piano to keep his character.
And is probably the hard part of your job.

I'd go for the dehumidifier. Particularly if winters are very dry.
And a cold vapor humidifier.

Damp Chaser can fight moderate variations but not extreme levels.

I've had a few piano adventures myself. I've bought a few, cleaned them up well and tuned them up well, played them for a while and enjoyed them and sold them in anticipation of the next piano adventure. smile

The pianos I have now are pretty much keepers... I do plan on giving one of my grands to my granddaughter, who is currently taking piano lessons and loving it.

So, I know how you feel about parting with a piano you have loved and enjoyed.

However, now, you can focus on your fine Grotrian! smile

Wishing you all the best!

Rick

With the Kawai sold, what you might do is put about half the money into the Grotrian work, and the other half into a slab-type digital. That way you have something to play during the down time on the Grotrian, and it won't take up a lot of room when the big one comes back. Having a digital for headphone practice alone is worth the money.
