Kevin,

The answer is... maybe. Any tipping on the lyre is not what the manufacturer had in mind - and I don't know of any who approve of the action. True, you might not notice the effect immediately. You might not notice it ever. But then again you might.

I know you are not dealing with Cunningham, because we don't do this.

I guess it is up to you. Do what makes you feel comfortable. Good luck and happy piano!

I'm having a piano delivered on Wednesday, and I'm prepared to call and ask that it not be tipped...However, I'm certain that it was tipped when it was setup in the showroom, and will likely be tipped in the showroom when they prepare to deliver it....
Well, I guess you could call and ask them not to tip it, just move it horizontally. If they protest that no pianos are moved like that, you can tell them they are wrong: that's how they move the mother of all grand pianos, the 12 foot Rubinstein. ;\)

How does it fit through doors?

I watched a Fazioli 308 being moved a few days ago. I cannot remember the details, but it was moved on its side, and there was no fancy equipment for tilting it.

The Rubinstein: It fits through doors. They just have to be big doors...

Just for the record, since it was my delivery being seen in the first pic...

When I was purchasing the piano, I 'did' strongly[/b] request that the piano 'not be tipped on the lyre' during setup, and almost freaked out when I saw what was going to happen. But then it was done and overwith in 3 seconds by two big delivery hunks and the store mgr! They surely seemed to know what they were doing and things looked AOK.

Hopefully all is still well. ;\)

How and when would we know if there was a problem (not that I am expecting one)?

LL

David Rubenstein is my bellyman in our restoration operation. He built a custom anvil type case on wheels for the 371 in which the piano does not get torn down in transit.

It doesn't get tipped, but the legs and lyre do get removed. I would consider that the "tear down" part of any move. Surely the tipping part is not "tear down".

You're right, the legs and lyre are removed than lowered on a subframe using a hydralic car jack and jack stands. The case is built around the subframe and loaded ultimately on a car carrier. It was a major deal at the Namm show

The main showroom(s) and restoration facility is in North Hollywood. I just purchased a Steinway B today in Indianapolis,Indiana. What local mover should I use to do a truck to truck to KB Carriage ? It is in a private residence.
