Dear Piano Corner friends,
I have been admitted to the hospital for severe dehydration due to excessive crying when Tiffany Poon was poonied and Schwamova was schwamowed over. However the doctors say that I will be discharged in time to watch Round 2.
Thank you for your concerns.
[PS The jury admitted 43 participants probably the bottom 4 (or more), no. 40 to 43 have tied scores]
Anyone has the link to the actual scores, I heard they would publish it for public scrutiny.

Predictions
I think we're in the same boat as we were with Tchaik 2015 in that no one has a clear path to the finals. However, I'd keep an eye out for the following people:
Seong-Jin Cho
Dinara Klinton
Aimi Kobayashi
Eric Lu
Arseny Tasasevich-Nikolaev
Dmitry Shishkin
As predicted! I haven't heard all of the others, but the surprising one to me was Ann, who played today. I felt that there were enough consistency issues to advance another player over her. Who knows. Regarding TP, the whole performance seemed fairly lightweight and predictable to me. Overall, there was a lack in depth, particularly the etudes.

Anyone has the link to the actual scores, I heard they would publish it for public scrutiny. In 2010 they didn't publish the scores until the conclusion of the competition, which makes sense. You don't want judges' round 2 scores to be biased by who's in the lead after round 1. The Tchaikovsky competition did something similar -- when the site posted scores after round 1 it was only for the contestants who were already eliminated.

The omission of Tiffany Poon will disappoint a lot of people. Her playing is very individual which is probably not ideal for competitions like this. So just exactly what type of playing "is" ideal for competitions like this?

Round 2 has 3 required pieces: A Ballade/Scherzo/Bacarolle/Fantasy, a Waltz, and a Polonaise. It also has the interesting provision that if this doesn't add up to 30 minutes, you can add in whatever pieces you want to make up the difference, as long as they're by Chopin.
Not everyone needed to do this, and of those that did, most of them just added in one of the pieces from the round 1/round 2 list. However, there are a few interesting additions, among them:
-Zhi Chao Julian Jia's doing the Berceuse and the Fantasy-Impromptu
-Dinara Klinton's tossing off 5 Op. 25 etudes before getting into the required pieces.
-Aimi Kobayashi's doing the Prelude in C-sharp Minor (no, not that one...everything's by Chopin here)
-Åukasz KrupiÅ„ski's doing one of the Etudes not in Op. 10 or 25.
-Georgijs Osokins is giving us Chopin's posthumous "Souvenir de Paganini" variations.
-Dmitry Shishkin is doing the Op. 1 Rondo in C (composed when Chopin was 14-15 years old)
Meanwhile, Seung-Jin Cho is listed as performing the entire 2nd sonata, which I assume has to be a typo. (nope, I was wrong! I didn't think he could fit it in a 30 minute program).

It doesn't really help if one or two judges really like you if the others really don't (unless you're Pogorelich and the judge is Argerich.) Mind you, Olaf Hansen, for instance, is a very idiosyncratic player and he made it through.

I have one more in my group of favorites: Seong-Jin CHO (South Korea)  I am not listening to all, and will have it difficult to follow the finals. I listened to this one now and liked him a lot.

Cho finished all 4 movements of Sonata 2, skipping the repeats in Movement 1. He used 39 minutes. (The duration allowed is 30-40 minute) [Although I have to stop Argerich from pressing the buzzer too early]

I watched a lot of the previous Chopin Competition. I find I cannot watch much of this competition because the same pieces get programmed over and over due to the rep requirements for each round. Of course, that was true in the previous competition where I must have gotten Chopined out. I just don't want to hear a Chopin Ballade, one of the last three Scherzi, the Barcarolle, or Fantasy any more for a while. Or the same five or six Etudes. Or out all the Nocturnes the contestants choose the same handful(for good reasons).

I really like Cho -- probably my favorite this morning -- but I am really baffled by his programme choice of including the Sonata. It sort of overshadows the required pieces. Then, if he passes, he'll have to play it again, and it wouldn't be as fresh to the jury. But maybe I've just watched one too many episode of Top (or Iron) Chef, where it's more important to let your main ingredient star in your dish. I guess a piano competition is an entirely different beast with its own strategies. Anyone has any insight into the participants' piece selection strategies?

Not necessarily. Cho can also play Sonata 3 Op.58 at the next round (or all preludes Op.28)

I get Chopin exhaustion too, but I guess they feel the only way they can judge playing of Chopin's music (the only music allowed) is to hear how different pianists play the same pieces. At least we don't have to be the judges and sit through everything... And, OnDemand we get a pretty good choice (if we can listen to ANY Chopin after hearing so much). We can skip ahead! I'll post something about that next.
