If using 2 pianos I plan to have the slightly larger one, as normal with treble side to the audience, lid up on long stick. I would move the shorter one next to it, with the bass side to the audience and with the lid removed.
Would that be the best way of doing things?

I feel like normally when I've seen pianos positioned like that, the lids are just kept closed.

That's exactly the setup used at the Brian Ganz Pianocraft recital recently.

That is one way of doing it. Another is to have the keyboards side by side. I want to try a third way when I move back into my house, which is in a wide V, with the keyboard of one to the left with the tail pointing back, and the other keyboard just to the right of center near the tail of the first piano, and the tail pointing forward. That way, both lids point out, more or less, and the players can still can see each other.

That's the way it usually is done, judging from videos I have seen with two pianos. Except that usually all the lids are removed. I have seen also setups where multiple pianos were further backstage, and a bit higher up, but I think that was just for the looks, not for the sound.
Soundwise I doubt it's the best solution. Removing the lid changes the projection of the sound.
I guess that soundwise, both pianos with the lid still on is better. But the pianists can then not see each other unless (only the rear one can see the back of the front one).
If you would put them right next to each other but with the lid both on, they can both see each other but then the lid of the front piano would disturb the sound of the rear piano.
Maybe it would be acoustically the best to put them right next to each other but also the rear piano a little higher (about 1 meter) and lids both on as usual
This is all theoretical. Never seen such a stepped setup let alone heard it for real.

Would that be the best way of doing things? That's the standard way. It's tried and tested. Or get one of these: Grotrian Duo-Piano

Holy moly! How the heck would you move something like that? That's about as awkward as it gets. I think it would be easier to reverse hinge the lid on a second piano.

It looks like the two pianos can be separated for moving. The lid also has a line in the middle, suggesting that it folds or comes apart. Pleyel also made double grands:

Now show me one person playing both keyboards on that duo Grotrian Steinweg and I will be really impressed.

Keith Emerson used to do this on parallel Hammond organs as part of the stage show.

Billy Mayerl did it on 2 pianos before the war. He would play facing one way, then spin round and play facing the opposite direction. Great showman.

Earl Grant would play a piano with one hand and a Hammond with the other.

Philip, The topless front piano is very common. I like the sound of both pianos with lids on and facing the same direction. I think the sound blend is better: in part because of the more independent pedaling and damper effects, and that the players have stronger communication. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vLwWbdxEFAAlways fun to experiment around. Enjoy

Damn... I got fooled, I though that Yuja went completely overboard on stage this time.
(Philip, I think this is what you are missing and some people were expecting from your title)
