Hi all. I appreciate using an iPad having had one for a couple of years. But after investing a lot of money into specialty hardware for astronomy technology utilizing the old, larger pin connector to attach my iPad to the astronomy hardware, Apple changed the pin design. This made my iPad and the expensive technology obsolete (to say nothing of the home electronics I purchased). I realize technology changes over time. This change left me with a no confidence in apple.
I use a Surface Pro 3, Music Reader 4, and Airsoft Bluetooth page turner. My trade off was not being able to utilitze the numerous and very good apps for the iPad. I must admit I don't miss the apps, but they would be fun to play with.
My slant on it anyway. Surface pro 3 is still one of the best options and not that much smaller as the picture shows. However if one want to get as close as possible to A4 size, the current best alternatives are the Ipad pro and the Surface book. SB is basically the same size (taking aspect ratio into account) and weight, but it comes at a much higher price, and the USB ports and battery life only come with the base attached. I think it makes sense only if one needs an ultrabook, but for just viewing sheet music it's too expensive and a worse experience than Ipad pro. As for the connector, the fact that Apple made it USB 3.0 capable means IMO that they are not going to change it for USB type C. Microsoft too is going the proprietary route (SurfaceConnect) and has even committed to it, at the least for the pro (the Surface 4, non pro, might move from microUSB to type C instead)

Thanks for that review of iPad Pro, DigitalGuy!
1. Which app do you use for displaying your scores? I use ForScore, and it would be GREAT if it supported the Apple Pencil adding notes on the staff rather than it's clunky annotation tool. On their website, ForScore says the Pencil works. I'll be picking up an iPad Pro tomorrow (replacing my current iPad) to work with forScore and my PageFlip Cicada

Please report back on your impressions ASAP, as I plan to hit the Apple Store on Tuesday (if they have the iPad Pro in stick, that is....) I've checked ForScore's site and can't find any reference to the Apple pencil. Would you have a link? Thanks!

In Portrait Mode the scores are now basically the same size as the original paper (because the surrounding white space is eliminated). No reason to use 1/2 pages in landscape mode anymore. Don't know what else to say, I love it. Just wish it had been a little less expensive, but zero regrets. I'd been waiting for it for about 2 years.

After having it for a few days it feels like "why hasn't this been there before?". If at first it looks ridiculously big, after using it for a while it feels the "right" size and other ipads look ridiculously small... And it's light, similar weight as ipad 4, but virtually twice as large. This was a much needed upgrade. I am not buying the keyboard as I won't be using this as a laptop (and I have several bluetooth keyboards and tablet stands) but I am hesitant to buy the Pencil. Are you going to buy it?

I have already ordered the pencil. Looking forward to use it occasionally with Touch Notation (for exporting from there to Synthesia) and for drawing.
I tried the pencil in the Apple Store. Zero lag. Very precise.

I won't buy the keyboard either. This iPad Pro, like my previous (and now useless) iPad 3, was purchased for piano scores only. I have zero use for an iPad otherwise. If I want a computer, I use a computer. I'll probably buy the pencil as a gadget to test, but I normally don't make any notations on scores.

Just saw this in Black Friday sale at John Lewis. If anyone has £700 burning a hole in their pocket, maybe you could buy one of these and report back with a review? 23" touchscreen - large enough for 2 full-size A4 pages. Looks like the stand allows you to alter the height and angle. You could run your software pianos on it too. Don't know about other brands, but the Kawai music rest folds back nicely to make a platform where you could put it (here's a 25" monitor on mine) Now someone just needs to write a good sheet music manager like ForScore for Windows!

After 14 months with an iPad 4th generation, I spoiled myself a week ago and bought an iPad Pro - and it is exactly what I've been waiting for. No more eye strain; my scanned sheet music in ForScore is full size at last. With its more powerful camera, Pro's scans are much crisper (so much so that I've scrapped my previous efforts and started all over again), and the screen display is crystal clear. Works perfectly with my AirTurn, too.
Like many Pro owners, I'm impatiently waiting for the Pencil delivery - then ForScore will really come into its own.
(Just as an aside, I mainly want the Pencil for my Procreate app - it will make it THE 'must-have' app for anyone who enjoys the occasional sketch or wants to dabble in digital painting ... )

Ah....I see that, once again, great minds think alike. I also bought the iPad Pro and LOVE the bigger screen. I agree that the music scores look much crisper. (I also come from an iPad 4) I've ordered my pencil and am awaiting delivery. ForScore says that the current version of the app will work with the pencil, but they do still plan on enhancing the pencil's functionality in future updates.

So, people, how is your Apple Pencil experience? Nobody wrote back since that time. Interesting to know your experience, was it worth it etc.

Thank you for reply. I found one full-sized screenshot from iPad Pro 12.9", to have an idea how can it look like. And it looks OK.

anyone tried a 21:9 monitor ?
I've borrowed one from elsewhere in house to try on PC (a relatively small 29 (small height wise) - and just tried Musecore on it and you can fit a lot of score content on it ...

I'm sure that the iPad Pro with pencil is a great solution, but I imagine that many won't have the budget for such an expensive piece of equipment. Just so that there isn't going to be the impression that you have to have such a large tablet, I wanted to give an example that it's perfectly possible to use a 200€ non-retina-display 10 inch Android tablet (in my case an Amazon Fire tablet) too, with a simple "fat tipped" 5-bucks tablet pen and together with the excellent MobileSheetsPro app. Here's what one of my scores looks like, as an example (that's an actual screenshot from my tablet):

I don't have a pencil. I just write on forScore with my finger. It produces an extremely fine line and is easy to use.

I sometimes use the pencil to copy notes from paper into the Kawai Touch Note app and from there to Synthesia. Pencil works better than fingers, because you can be more precise (the tip is smaller, obviously). With fingers, though, I just zoomed into the sheet more.
The pencil itself is quite amazing, almost no lag/latency, very precise, etc. In drawing apss it can behave like a pencil, brush etc. like different strokes when you change the angle to the display etc. It sure needs to be, at the price :-)
The iPad Pro 12" fits a full sheet in original size, which is fantastic, also its sound system with the four speakers is very good for a tablet. Of course no match for the DP we have. But I also use it for piano learning apps and as the virtual piano and speakers for my 61 keys Studiologic VMK161 which I take on vacations to be able to practice.

If it can be of help you can have a look at this post where I showed pictures of ipad pro 12.9 compared to surface pro 3 and to ipad air 9.7. https://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthre...-on-the-tablet-touch-pc.html#Post2480966For me the ipad 12.9 is the best solution. The only larger (but more expensive option) is the surface book 15 (surface book 13.5 has the same surface as the ipad 12.9 because of its aspect ratio). I would suggest buying a 1st gen ipad pro 12.9, ti's still very fast and future proof (4 GB RAM, like current pros) Don't worry about Forscore, they cannot remove feature you have already bought. And ipad is no longer a locked down system. IpadOS 13 opened a lot of new features, making it a much more open system and my guess is that it will get even better.
