When I listen to recordings of my playing, I often feel as though it lacks some unknown quality that separates it from a concert pianist or the like. It may be the fact that I'm playing on a digital but I have no way to record an acoustic. Maybe someone on here knows what the difference is? Obviously I am not at a similar level but it feels like a control or tonal thing.. I just can't pinpoint it.
My short recording: https://soundcloud.com/d159/371a
Rubinstein: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dhp_wYUDgc0
Any ideas?

I'll try to answer even if I really don't like Rubinstein's Chopin much smile

First your digital certainly doesn't sound the way an acoustic does.
Your recording lacks the tonal control and phrasing of a professional. Some unevenness aside your playing sounds just "nice". But the legato and phrasing sound superficial in comparison and the dynamic control is not quite on the same level. There's still a feeling of carefully reproducing notes instead of really attacking the music and bringing it alive.

But I guess if it really was so easy to explain in a few words what greatness is made from, we could all do it...

I think that much of it can be attributed to the digital. They do not have the dynamic response of an acoustic, in my opinion. However, you can learn from them. What you cannot accomplish with dynamics, you have to learn to do with agogics.
