I've been away from the piano for a while & my note reading skills have eroded some. Is there any (free) note reading software available that would help me get my skills back.

What I'd like is software that would show a note & then allow me to guess what the note is before moving on to the next note, etc.

My personal favourite is NotesDeMusique (don't be put off by the foreign sounding name) and is a free app from the google store. Not sure if it is available for those generic fruit based devices but after trying a few I find this a great little app.

There is also this

However when you want to get away from the computer for a while there is the old fashioned but highly recommended flash cards available here

Surprisingly easy, barely an inconvenience.

I have a question:

Usually, you don't have to look at a score, and _say_ "C#". You have to look at a score, and _play_ C#.

. . . Wouldn't it be more useful to have software that showed you a note (on the staff),
. . . and had you _play_ it on the keyboard, rather than name it?

There was an ancient program for learning typing that worked like that -- it was very effective.

There are such programs and the one I have is Prestokeys as well as a more advanced subscription type program sightreadingfactory.com.

However I am now highly critical of using software for sight reading due to the many pitfalls and deficiencies in the various programs. Quick note naming though is an important first step in sight reading so I think programs can be of great benefit. But as soon as possible ditch the programs and move on to the old fashioned method of pick up a sheet of music and play as written.

Having lodged my criticism though I have to say the program that looks the best is SightRead4Piano by Wessar. But it requires one of those generic fruit based devices I do not as yet own.

These are paid apps but worth a look: Piano Maestro (Joytunes), Piano Marvel and Musiah. For complete beginners Simply Piano.

+1 !!!!!!

I understand, though, that it may make sense to do sight-reading "one note at a time", before picking up a full sheet of music.

Actually, the OP is asking "How can I learn to sight-read?" -- and there are lots of threads about that, suggesting _printed_ resources, instead of software.
