Dear real JAZZ lovers,

You want to sound always modern & powerful?
This is not so easy.
There's a lot to learn.

But listen to this performance first and learn something, then everything will be a little easier:

ELI MINE - Mr. P.C. (J.Coltrane)

Enjoy! ,)

You've got to be kidding me about your post. This message board is a place for serious jazz students amigo, you'd better be able to back up your claims! Your Mr. PC has: Bad time, bad dynamics, not one good line in the the whole solo. No sense of a melodic improvised line. A couple of nice voicings poorly placed. Who do you think you are fooling, give us a break!

Dave Frank

Dear Mr. Frank, here is something more acceptable for your ears.
Improvisational approach is more melodic, and logical. More catchy...

ELI MINE - Blue Bossa (amazing solo)

I wish I had the kahunas to write "amazing solo," about myself.

That tag of 'amazing solo' will get you some potential listeners who will no longer listen.

"Blue Bossa" actually goes something like this:

I kind of wish this thread would have been titled differently, like asking for feedback or sharing your or someone you know's music. But I clicked the Mr. P.C. link pretty hopeful and now I'm compelled to share this Tyner/Scofield/Carter/DeJohnette version, which I guess wouldn't be "new" given the age of the musicians, but I think it's powerful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZMRToIsn-0

Man, in your post you threw the bar very high, but in the record you still pass freely beneath it. To play power jazz, required a fire , a high degree of intensity of sound, rhythm, technique, texture, dynamics. It's not enough to play licks of McCoy, necessary to recreate this special atmosphere and the overall sound. Your rhythm section is unfortunately not involved in this at all. Keep working on it, Eli, you have very good potential!

I had broken two fingers when I played it so it's not loud enough. My rhythm section hates me and plays all out. I don't pay them enough! .-I

I think you may be misusing the word 'power' in musical context. And that's the easy question. The tough question is, "How do you define 'Modern' when we're well into, if not through, Postmodern?

I'm thinking someone's been reading the "P.T. Barnum Manual on Carnival Barking" and putting it into practice. I don't know if this book exists. But it must.

Eli,

This is a harsh audience. I will advise you as a more kindly teacher would that too much pedal was used... you allowed yourself to be too laid back in time, and that your melodic tendencies were often too ambiguous without a clear punchline, when improvising melodic of phrases it's is wise to consider the goal of each phrase: resolution tendency, "target note" excitement. Jazz+

Here is a master of "powerful", notice the minimum use of pedal, the persistent time keeping, the target of exciting notes at the conclusion of each phrase.
melodic creation can be taught, but it is not understood how to by 99% of teachers. There are 2 videos on youtube that show how,,, but 99% of students are also not patient enough to develop it. The masters are patient people (10,000 hours?)
.

Rintincop! Get that Monty Alexander on a leash and turn the fire hose on because it's THAT good! Nice track ... I just downloaded the whole thing from iTunes.

Because one good MA deserves another here's MA (on fire) w/Bobby Durham on drums.

funny thread. how about: here's something I recorded; what do you think? All you guys can play circles around me. Nothing beats a simple melody, well-articulated. I recently went to a concert of "modern" classical piano pieces, all of which veered toward jazz. All the players were technically dazzling. But there wasn't a hummable melody to be found. Play something people will want to hum.

Playing just melody is more simple way to do something... Everybody can do it, kids also., This is very serious progressive, but also natural playing.,, For advanced kids...
