Rather surprised that the OP didn't get it considering all the recitals and masterclasses he attends. OTOH, the piece is sadly neglected on the concert platform, and if my experience at uni was anything to go by, it was snobbishly dismissed along with the concerto as being easier to play than it sounded. (So therefore it is not wonderful music? I was guilty at the time.)

Very handsome lad playing BTW...

Sounds surprisingly pleasant considering.

Never heard it in any live concert or master class or even seen it programmed on any recital program in NYC. I have listened to some of it on YT, but I don't think I ever got beyond the first two movements. The piece is certainly neglected, but whether it's "sadly neglected" I don't know.

It would be nice if some recitals included miniatures by Grieg or Mendelssohn, but for me, those pieces are sadly neglected.

I don't think that the Grieg piano sonata is considered a highlight in his production. It is an early work published before all the Lyric pieces. I think that Grieg was most successful with the smaller format. Like the Lyric pieces and the numerous songs (Lieder, romances or whatever you call them). Sadly most of the music written for vocal with piano is little known outside Norway, because most of the texts are in Norwegian.

Being of Norwegian (and Swedish) extraction, I considered being pleasantly surprised, but I'm still considering...

Actually I recall reading somewhere that Grieg was quite unhappy with his publishers asking continuously for new lyric pieces... I don't think that he was happy to keep composing such short works for the rest of his life.

(BTW he's done some FANTASTIC choral work).

And I love the whole sonata...

I'm a chorist and fully agree about Grieg's choral works.
And I don't say that the sonata is bad, but I consider other parts of his piano production at least as good. And this is not only Lyric Pieces.

The Grieg Sonata is a good piece for an intermediate player, as it is not terribly difficult. Perhaps nice as a first long romantic piece.

As for me, I never particularly felt much for Grieg until I started reading through his sonata. A big, very convincing work.

I'm sure you know some of the songs also. Years ago I accompanied several of them. Wonderful.

Fully agree here. The Ave Maris Stella is a masterpiece!

I performed one of his violin sonatas once, C minor, I think, and thoroughly enjoyed it, including the learning part (which is usually the big test for me). On the other hand, I just can't fathom why the piano concerto is ever played in public. The first movement is just awful, from the first note to the last. And the other movements aren't much better. sick

Here's the violin sonata:

Because it is a great deal of fun! With brief interruptions of pretty.
It might not be the most profound music ever written, but there's always room for fun and pretty.
