I have never played before and am going to start learning. I thinking of getting a yamaha p45 or casio cdp 130. I'm steering towards the yamaha though because it has a larger polithany.
Everytime I read online about the p45 everyone says don't bother and get the p115.
This is my thought process, please tell me if I am daft.
I do not want to spend a lot of money incase I give up.
The p115 has better speakers but I'll be mostly using headphones while learning.
If I am really not happy with the sound i could plug up some speakers I already have.
If I stick with learning and enjoy it I would probably upgrade to a nice expensive piano and keep the p45 as it is portable.
Does this sound sensible,am i missing anything and do you think the p45 is a better option over the casio?
Thanks for your advice I just hope I stick with it and enjoy it as well.

Tried the p45 next to the ES8. It didnt seem lacking in basic tone at all. That may be just about all it has, though, dont know for sure but the price is very good. A decent basic piano sound, with a few more bits thrown in. The spec sheet will tell you. Certainly fine to learn on.

Yes, your plan is fine. I would spend a bit more and get the Casio PX-160 which is a better overall piano (in my opinion). But if you prefer the yamaha or if your budget is already stretched, then it would be a fine computer to learn on. You're right that if you get serious about piano you might want to eventually upgrade to something better, but the Yamaha should be adequate for years. Good Luck with your piano journey!

FWIW (I haven't played a P45, and might be "brand-biased") --

The P45 and P105/P115 share the same action -- Yamaha's "GHS" (Graded Hammer Standard). They have different sound generators, and I assume the P105/P115 has better samples.

The P105/115 also has "damper resonance" -- a keystrike with the pedal down, sounds different than with the pedal up. That's a pretty fundamental thing about the sound of an acoustic piano.

. . . So the P105/P115 will sound better than the P45, and feel the same as the P45.

IMHO, the Casio action on the PX-150/PX-160 is nicer to play, and closer to an acoustic piano's action, than the Yamaha GHS. Other people may disagree.

The "feature sets" on the sound generators -- Casio PX-150/160 vs Yamaha P105/115 -- are similar. Both sound OK, through headphones or good loudspeakers -- certainly good enough to learn on.

If money is really tight, the P45 is a reasonable choice. If you have some wiggle room, I'd move up one level to a P105/P115 or Casio PX-150/PX-160.

There's an active "used DP market" for all of them.

Hi, I agree with previous posts, and IMHO you must try Kawai ES100, best key action under $1500 price range and try Roland FP30 too. Cheers!.
