Air Recorder didn't work with the previous series either.
It worked with a bunch of the MI products, but not the home pianos. That sounds like a rum state of affairs, especially for someone who has just bought an iphone, possibly in the hope of doing just that. What ought one do now in such a predicament as this? Are there some non-brand apps that will do the same thing?

There was an app called Air Performer that worked over the wifi protocol with the old pianos.
I guess I need to ask Adam what aspects of the Air Performer programs were most important so I can see if there is a recommendation to be made.
if it is the ability to speed up and slow down tracks from an iTunes library, or over the air recording.
Air Recorder can be used with a wired connection. However the audio recording would only go one way at a time. The connection on the piano is TRS, and for TWO way audio he would need TRRS.
Adam, let me know what you want to do specifically and I'll see if there's a recommendation.

Jay, thanks much for the quick and helpful reply; bummed that the app is indeed incompatible with the LX-17, but at least now I know that user-error wasn't involved. Toddy, while I didn't get an iPhone just for this, you've indeed hit on something here; in my case, I decided to break my long long long string of Android usage and try an iPhone in large part due to what I'd heard about iOS being amazing for musicians... and also noting that some Roland apps like Air Recorder were iOS-only. So while I'm not cursing either Roland or my decision to get an iPhone, I am certainly disappointed... and also hopeful that if enough of us respectfully contact Roland to remedy this situation, perhaps they'll prioritize an update for the app Jay, here's the use case I had in mind the other night -- basically one-touch, lightweight bluetooth-MIDI recording for my nightly experimental sessions.More specifically... I've been quite often improv'ing & exploring themes for possible compositions, trying to make new and interesting chord progressions and melodies, and so on. Really just messing around . I'd love to make informal recordings of sessions like this so I can, as I wish, go back and re-listen to a particular bit that especially delighted me. I had hoped that Air Record was the answer. Somehow, it just felt less formal / less scary. And I don't have a USB camera connection or lightning connector or whatever yet. And with a copy in the cloud, I could listen to my noodling during a break the next day at work from my macbook, etc. Some requests for Air Record:- First and foremost, work with the Roland digital pianos - Be available both on iOS and Android - Record in either audio or MIDI formats or even both simultaneously! - Offer quick and easy ability to jump forward/back (e.g., 30 seconds, 1 minute, etc.) - Simple trim option (remove from x:xx to y:yy; save only x:xx to y:yy) - Offer variable-speed playback (.5x to 2x) - Send/sync files to more than just iCloud (e.g., Google Drive, MS OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.) - Have a setting to automatically remove saved files from phone (immediately after sending to the cloud, after [x] days, [y]mb of storage, etc.) Do let me know if there's an appropriate person / department / email address / whatnot where I and others should send our requests Thanks so much!

Hi peoples, I was wondering about the V-Piano and how much of what makes the V-Piano so good went into the HP/LX Roland models? Is the V-Piano that much better or on a different level of quality, Does the HP/LX pianos come closer to the real thing? If money was no object and you had the room, the space and all that, which one would you buy? the LX17 or a V-Piano for the authentic piano sound? and the reason for your choice?

Okay, I swear I am not normally getting so many gadgets in a small amount of time, but I just ordered an iPad Pro (12.9" one) and am getting it on Wednesday. I recall from advice up-thread that typically a Lighting-USB Camera Adapter is recommended for doing MIDI stuff with the LX-17 (outside of Bluetooth). But this raises two questions: 1) Any reason to get the new, more expensive USB3 version from Apple since the big iPad Pro supports USB 3? 2) Also, I'm confused why a simple cheap Lightning-USB cable (like the kind you use to charge an iPhone) wouldn't also suffice. And lastly, would a Lightning-USB Camera Adapter also be used for doing audio (instead of MIDI) recording? Thanks!

The 2nd one would not work. It is for connecting Lightning device to a computer. To connect to a MIDI keyboard, you need a Lightning to USB Camera adapter.
If you want to also use the adapter for something else (e.g. transfer images from camera), USB3 would be an advantage. But it does not offers much benefit for MIDI. MIDI data is pretty small. USB2 is plenty fast enough. I use mine with iPad 4th gen and never have a problem with hiccup or dropout MIDI.

Are there any high quality audio recordings of the new Roland SuperNatural modeling sound from HP/LX series? Everything I find on the Internet is YouTube videos of salesmen banging the typical stuff. I guess even the internal instrument demos would suffice but can't find any of them.

Thanks, I'll listen it but I'd prefer to hear some music though Yes! That was always the problem I had with audio magazines - it was all numbers/specs/waveforms. Yes, they tell one story, but to me the bottom line was always "how does it really sound playing the music I want to hear?". Every once in a while, an amp, preamp, or receiver would come along with "lousy" specs, but would sound really good. The Advent 300 receiver was one of those. The number simply did not tell the same story as listening to actual music did. It became quite a popular receiver once the magazines and audiophiles discovered that. Tony

If money was no object and you had the room, the space and all that, which one would you buy? the LX17 or a V-Piano for the authentic piano sound? and the reason for your choice? This is an interesting question, and I will be watching for any followup posts to. I spent very little time with an LX-7 and LX-17. Also I have the V-Grand, and have never even seen a V-Piano, though I would love to someday. The pictures I have seen look really nice and "modern". Compared to my V-Grand, I thought the LX units sounded somewhat "smaller" somehow. There could be many reasons for that, from the models used to the sound system, to the respective rooms they were in and placement within the room, to the particular adjustments of the sound itself. The V-Grand has 240 watts across 4 channels, with each speaker's output changing with what you are playing to give the impression of where the sounds would be coming from if there were strings instead of speakers in the "harp" area. It sounds big and powerful, and fills a room with sound. Because of that, in my condo, I usually have to use headphones. I found that different models sound better through headphones, and others sound better through speakers. My favorite model through headphones is a vertical piano model, and the "Vintage" models through the speakers. I did not get to listen to the LX series through headphones. My V-Grand is in my living room, probably 15 x 20, while the LX pianos were in a smaller room in the show room, but much larger than my living room and definitely different acoustics. I did not find either the V-Grand or the LX series lacking in sonic ability, just that the V-Grand seems "bigger" somehow to me. Though the V-Grand and V-Piano are not quite the same, they have similar engines, so maybe this is of some use. The V-Grand has two more models, from what I understand, and both (I think) have more models and more adjustments to fiddle with the sound than the LX series. I honestly don't think that the V-Grand sounded necessarily "better", I find it somehow more satisfying overall to play. If I had them side by side and some time to really fool around with all of these, I could probably provide more accurate information beyond quick first impressions. I have lived with the V-Grand for a few years now and am comfortable with its look, feel, and sound, so naturally I will prefer it unless something came along that totally blows it away. Tony

It seems like the V-Grand now has some competition coming from the Physis G1000. Hopefully, someone here will have a try at both the V and the G (yes, I'm hip), and post/make some comparisons between the two.

That would have been the role of Richard pv88 who actually has both of those pianos and is keen to demonstrate his DPs online. In fact, he has recently been giving details of how the V would have to be relegated to the kitchen to make way for the new G. Unfortunately, looks like he's been barred from this site for making an offensive remark, so we'll have to look elsewhere or wait.

Hopefully, someone here will have a try at both the V and the G (yes, I'm hip), and post/make some comparisons between the two. That would be interesting. In any of these comparisons, it would be beneficial to be able to separate "fact" from "personal taste". I tried to go to lengths in my post to give a context for understanding why the V-Grand appeals more to me and what could account for the differences I heard, while concluding that one did not sound "better" than another, but somewhat different. In other words, it is often too easy to leave the impression that one object in such a comparison is better than the other at the expense of the other, when in fact, both can be equally good depending on circumstances, need, and personal taste. A person would really need to sit down to a V-Grand to fully appreciate what Roland accomplished in recreating the experience of a "real" grand piano. It is not simply a V-Piano stuffed into an expensive cabinet, as some here have implied over the years. Though some here have in the past taken some offense when people have implied the idea of "real" vs digital piano (and my saying that DPs today are more than "good enough"), I have come to the conclusion that, because DPs are always being compared to the "real thing" in this forum, such a way of viewing it is valid here. If we were to look at DPs as being "piano-like", but being on their own apart from acoustic pianos as equally valid instruments, then such a view would not always make sense. It is the overall tone of discussion in this sub-forum that makes that differentiation. So, when making these comparisons between modelled digital pianos, is it from the perspective of these DPs being closer to the "real thing", or that they are becoming a more satisfying and fulfilling instrument to play in their own right as a valid instrument apart from acoustic pianos (i.e. we are now accepting DPs as a "real thing" too)? My comparison of the V-Grand to the new LX series is DP to DP, rather than whether each comes closer than the other to an acoustic piano. I personally am finding the V-Grand and the LX series to be fulfilling instruments in their own right, regardless of how they might compare to an acoustic piano. For a pianist for whom only an acoustic piano will do (and there are plenty of those elsewhere in these forums), a concession to owning a DP for late night practice or whatever, comparing a DP to an acoustic will probably always be the issue. For a piano playing hobbyist such as myself, whose primary instrument has been acoustic/classical guitar and piano a more recent interest, a decent DP is really what I want in the end. The V-Grand, in my opinion, far exceeds what I could have hoped for, and I am sure the new Roland LX series would do likewise for me, as might Physis instruments. Tony

The only concern I would have is that he wait until the "honeymoon" period is over so the "wow factor" of a new DP doesn't play into what he is experiencing when he plays. I see that as a normal human thing we all would be affected by for at least a few weeks of ownership of a new DP, rather than something unique to pv88. Edit: When you get into something like the V-Grand, the equivalent from Yamaha or Kawai (both of whom have that class of DP in their product lineup), or probably the G1000, that is an instrument you stay with for a long time. People I know who buy decent acoustic pianos, tend to keep them for a very long time. Slab DPs and low-to-mid range DPs, people might flip periodically to get the latest and greatest in that range because technology does change over the years and the initial investment is not that great. Though I am sure Roland will continue to improve on its modelling engine and the hardware it runs on, something like the V-Grand is decent enough to begin with, that it can serve for a very long time. If I had one of the Yamaha N series DPs that some discuss here, I would feel the same way about it too. Tony

I guess we ll alwsys be comparing the real thing to the usurper (allegedly)
I was all set to try some acoustics out at my local shop (for the second time) when I inadvertantly listened to a recording of a song on Youtube. Wasn t even on a good digital by todays standards, but the guy knew how to play. Magnificently along with those others playing the same song.
Then I turned up this other guy playing same tune on a Yamaha grand. He too, knew what he was doing. And so did the piano. . . a mind of its own, like our dog. Did its own thing; resonances out of control, bass notes left a lot to be desired etc altnough it was well enough tuned.
Had a listen to some more acoustics and came to a conclusion.
I dont intend to blow my familys money on a Steinway. But I might get a better Roland some time hence,. . . and rest content with that for a long time to come.

I hope the artist formerly known as pv88 shows up at some point. If not, Tony's gonna have to take a trip to Italy to try the G1000, and then get back to us with a thorough, unbiased, and transparent review. I would suggest bringing the V-Grand along (to be placed next to the G1000) for real-time comparisons. I believe Sir Ben nevis owns a V-Piano, so I assume it wouldn't hurt for him to order the H1 (stand not included), and give us a totally biased review/comparison!

I believe Sir Ben nevis owns a V-Piano, so I assume it wouldn't hurt for him to order the H1 (stand not included), and give us a totally biased review/comparison! Can do! Could you hand me that V-Grand over there? One thing with the V-Piano is that, if you intend to use speakers instead of headphones in the comparison, then you get into what amp/speakers to use, and getting the speaker placement right. This introduces quite a few variables. I assume the G1000 is similar to the V-Grand in that it is all-in-one, so you just turn it on and play, whether speakers or headphones are involved. I am not going to be buying another piano, acoustic or otherwise, since the V-Grand by itself used all the space in my condo that could have gone to multiple smaller DPs, not to mention the bank account. The V-Grand is long paid for, but I wouldn't want to take the financial hit again. We guitar players typically own more than one guitar, but it still sounds strange to me to own a bunch of pianos for some reason. One problem I have when it comes to comparisons is that I tend to like what I am used to. I tried the new Casio GP series that was discussed at length here. I simply liked the V-Grand much better, but I don't think I gave the Casio a fair chance - I am biased toward my V-Grand through familiarity. There may be others here who aren't so inclined and would provide a much more even-handed comparison. For me, it would take a DP that is far superior in every way to my V-Grand for me to take to it. Even when comparing the newer Roland keybeds, I am too familiar with the keybed on my V-Grand, and prefer it. That is not a reflection on which is technically "better", but instead more about what I get used to. If a person is going to spend this kind of money on a DP, I would hope the person really does like that instrument and is not looking over his or her shoulder wondering if s/he could have done better. Thank you for knighting me (as Her Majesty has yet to show any interest in Scotland's highest.......just because it's too far from Balmoral ) But you are right - I'm too biased to offer a biased review. Even the thought of that Fatar action adds another furrow to my noble frown.......

Thanks for the info on the lightning cable stuff, Siros! Do you know what I'd need to record audio from the LX-17? (it's really frustrating me that I'm not finding resources to teach me this basic stuff online... or I may just be Googling the wrong stuff). On one hand, it'd be awesome if the LX-17 could transit audio data via the same connector, but my gut is I'd instead need to use the audio out. And then it's unclear how I'd get that audio data into my iPad or Macbook...
