The keyboard seems to be a big toy. It has many keys, and pressing on a set of keys in a particular order makes music. The keyboard provides entertainment and mental stimulation. And there are so many music sheets in the world, which feed you instructions how to perform cool stuff on the keyboard. You can also compose your own music sheets and add to the worldwide collection of music. It's like a toy for all ages, but unlike stuffed animals or dolls, there is always something new and challenging.

The keyboard is the original video game.

I tried playing the drums the other week. It's a lot like playing a big piano with sticks.

As someone who plays a lot of video games, I certainly agree with this. It definitely triggers similar (the same?) challenges and emotional responses/reward.

The drums on a digital piano are fantastic but could do with laying out better so you can sound something like a proper drummer. . .

Totally. Now that we have video games, we have far fewer keyboardists.

I play video games. There are some folks I play video games with who are so good that I wonder, wow, if you took that quick brain and those quick reflexes to the keyboard...

I used to play in competitive Quake/Quake3 leagues back in my college days. I suspect I could probably fight off some of these young whipper-snappers with guile and trickiness and utilizing game engine quirks ... assuming I went back to that 3-6 hours of non-stop gaming every night to regain my twitchy reflexes.

But I'm much happier with my ~30mins piano practice per day. As today's kids grow up and can no longer spend so much time playing video games, some of them might switch to music.

I got out of video games just around the time that multiplayer competition was becoming the norm. Something seemed odd about vgs becoming 'work' for which players "practiced" their skills to get ready for serious gaming. Years later I ironically took up the piano to play some old vg soundtracks.

So I don't associate vgs with repetitious honing of a craft although I understand why others do.

I have heard it said that the only difference between men and boys is the amount they pay for their toys.

I have 2 really big toys. 1 is a 9' Bluthner. The other, bigger, one is a 12' 1,250Kg snooker table.
