Has anybody used one of these for recording piano? I'm trying to find the simplest way to record a couple things in stereo without investing in mics and a mixer (yet). Thanks. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/H1

The Zoom H4N seems to be very popular for recording music. I have one. The price seems to be 1.5 times to that of Zoom H1. You might want to check it out: cnet review: Zoom H4N1

I love, love, love the Zoom products. I have both the Zoom H4 and a Q8. They're very easy to operate, practically foolproof (= you get decent sound with no distortion and clipping pretty much wherever you set up), and relatively inexpensive. I recommend them highly.

I'm using the H1 and find the sound quality to be decent, other than the fact it doesn't produce bass very well. The bass doesn't extend down and doesn't have much impact, but for the price it sounded better than the Tascam equivalent that I tried. I can't remember the Tascam model, maybe DR-05 or something?
Edit: I also find the H2N and H4(n) to be pretty similar. Probably not worth the price jump in terms of quality. For myself personally if I were to upgrade it would have to be the H6, which sounds significantly better than the H1, or dedicated microphones for the piano.

I have a Zoom H4 (it preceded the H4N) and really like it.
I've been looking at specs. The H1 and H2 probably use electret-condenser mics, not "true condenser" mics.
The H4 / H4N use "true condenser" mics, and will give you 48 volt "phantom power" if you want to use other condenser mics with it. [I have a pair of Behringer C-2 mics; IMHO they're better than the built-in mics, but not a whole lot better.]
It's a lot of recorder for its size, weight, and cost.

Well, I just bought the zoom h4n and I'm very satisfied. Also bought a separate mic with it and it is a perfect combo. I made a thread about it with some recordings. Still experimenting with the placing of the mic and such. I think the h4n is a great device!

I've just started looking at recorders, overwhelmed H4, H4N, H4N PRO, H5 H6. I just want something that does a better job than the recorder ap I downloaded on itunes.

I'm very sorry to hijack this thread but whenever I record my own playing when I play back the recording it sounds very loud and a little bit distorted. I found the only way to mitigate against this was to move my recording device (Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus mobile phone) quite a distance away from my piano. I do however feel like I am missing a trick or maybe even several tricks. Any suggestions please would be most welcome.

Your mobile probably doesn't have an automatic recording level, or it's been set too high? If it has the former, the dynamics will be smoothed out, but at least you shouldn't get distortion unless the manufacturer didn't get its setting right. I don't have a mobile, but I believe my iPod Touch does the same job as an iPhone, and I don't get distortion with it. With dedicated recording devices like the H4n, which is what I use, you can set the recording level manually, to get the best sound without distortion, for the distance you've got the device to the piano (and of course, how loudly you play).
If music be the food of love, play on!

Thank you very much for this it is really really helpful. I have just been trawling the Internet after speaking to PMT which is where I bought my piano from. They suggested buying a Boss BR80 but a little Internet searching also showed up a Roland R05 and the Zoom H1. Typically I now don't know what to buy

I ordered a Roland R05 this evening. It was very much a toss up between the Roland and the Boss. What finally swayed me was the fact that the Boss seemed heavily skewed towards guitar playing with a lot of effects which seemed aimed at guitar players. The other deciding factor was that the Roland has a 'rehearse mode' which allows you to play a little bit and then it automatically sets recording levels for you making it idiot proof even enough for me. Neither device had speakers which disappointed me but I have also bought a speaker tube for forty quid on Amazon. Apparently to get a device with a decent speaker system costs a bloody fortune and the speakers still ain't spectacular.
