To my knowledge, the American made Baldwin Artists grands were the M-5'2", the R-5'8", the L-6'3", the SF10-7' and the SD10, 9'.
There are a few members of PW who used to work for Baldwin back in the day... maybe they will see this thread, or your other thread, and chime in with some helpful info.
I got to play an older Baldwin SF10 (7') a bit this evening at a church. A very nice bass. But not as good as my Yamaha C7, and just a tad better than my Baldwin R.
The thing about the Baldwin Artists series, even the smaller grands have a rich low bass tone.
Sounds like you are definitely focused on a Baldwin.
Good luck, and keep us informed!

Rick, you have a Baldwin R? I think I'm almost set to trade in my U1 for an R in satin ebony! I am SO EXCITED!!!! Do you love it? I've only ever played Ms, and one super old R from 1911, LOL. This one is quite a bit younger.

It's actually a Queen-Ann style (Art Case?) with the French legs, but I don't hold that against her. Good luck with the trade!

Hi Rick, new to the forum.
Is it safe to say that the Baldwins made in the French Provincial case are "Artist Series" grands? Have you ever seen a French Provincial case like yours that wasn't Artist Series?

Those may be French legs but they don't look anything like mine.

Is it safe to say that the Baldwins made in the French Provincial case are "Artist Series" grands? Have you ever seen a French Provincial case like yours that wasn't Artist Series? Hello, and welcome to Piano World! My particular Baldwin R is a model 226, which is the art-case model. And, to my knowledge, all Baldwin Rs are Artists series grands; but I've learned to never say never; there may well be other Baldwin models that are art-case styles but not artist-series. I was not looking for an art-case grand, per-se; but the Baldwin came up for sale privately fairly close by and the deal was too good to pass up. I've heard that the art-case style grand pianos are more difficult to sell than the standard spade-leg model, but I don't know enough about the piano market to know for sure one way or the other. All I know is that I like the way it sounds and plays. Those may be French legs but they don't look anything like mine. Jean Claude, I'm sure your legs look just fine; do you shave them? (Just kidding) Rick

Thanks for all of the info on the Baldwin R. I am interested in one from 1986, original owner,I love the touch, sound, look, but I am concerned it is 30 years old. Gently used, hammers look very good. What should I expect to pay for this approximately?

At 30 years old, this piano could still have a lot of life left or be clapped out. Pianos have many mechanical parts and many things that escape the untrained eye so the best advise would be to hire an independent piano technician to assess it. The price of this piano would be very dependent on the condition and the location of the piano.

It's at a local store. In fact, their house technician is also my technician. Nothing wrong with this piano at all. What do you think on a low end high end for pricing?

Hi Andrea, I'm as far from an expert as the east is from the west. Having said that, that Baldwin R probably retailed for close to $30K back in the day. You could use Larry Fine's acoustic piano depreciation scale in the "PianoBuyer" online, or you could Google "Baldwin R for sale" and look at the average asking prices. Being offered for sale at a dealer usually means a higher price than from a private seller, but that is not written in stone. I would guesstimate a low and high price of between $6K and $12K (conservatively). I have seen some sellers asking exorbitant prices for a used Baldwin R (like $18K +). As Ed mentioned, condition is paramount. Good luck, and keep us informed! Rick

Thanks Rick! I just got a new Baldwin that has an art case but does not say "R" - also, model is 225, apparently, not 226. Wondering if anyone has ever heard of this. Made me wonder if it was an Artist Series model or not, but I think it is... This picture set is the only one I could find that looks exactly like my 225. http://sonnyspianotv.com/gal_piano_photos.php?id=188. My model is from 1973 according to the serial number. You can see the differences in the typical art case vs. this one (the music stand has a different carving in the center, for example) - haven't seen any others exactly like this. Thanks if anyone has any information on 225 vs. 226!

Thanks if anyone has any information on 225 vs. 226! Wow, that is certainly a beautiful Baldwin Art-Case grand in Sonny's photos! It is much more intricately detailed than the R 226 I have. How could that piano NOT be an Artist Series! Maybe some of the real piano experts will chime in with more info for you. Also, you might get more responses if you start a new thread regarding your questions. You could title it "Baldwin Art Case model 225, is it an artist series?" or something like that. Good luck! Rick
