Long-time lurker, newbie poster here. Thank you guys so much! Without these forums I wouldn't have considered trying out Schimmel, Petrof, or Estonia in my search for my first 6' grand.

Anyway, I tried out an Estonia 190L from mid-2000s. Now I know what y'all were talking about. My tech says it's in nearly unused condition. It does have a smidge of that vexing overtone issue. Given old PianoWorld postings they seem to be asking what they paid for it (~24k). I've checked out the nationwide Craigslist/ebay posts and most seem to be asking 17-21k before haggling. My nearest mega-metropolis Estonia dealer is willing to quote me a new one for ~36k (academic price; haha says spouse).

What's a good offer? I'm in a medium-sized metro area in the south with not a huge piano scene/market.

If you hear that overtone issue don't buy it. Nearly drove me crazy. Sold my 2008 L190 last year.

Considering at work I often hear people trying to play double reed instruments for the first time I *think* the overtone issue is dealable.

If this falls through, what should I try that is the most similar, perhaps with a better pianissimo? What'd you buy as a replacement Mark? I liked the Estonia touch/sound better than anything else I've tried in my price range, but since my town has limited options I've not tried M&H, Shigeru Kawai, or one of the big B brands yet. Nor have I tried a 2010+ Estonia. Do those have the same issue? I'll be in NYC at the end of the month and can try out there... now if Allegro's showroom in Manhattan were only open...

If you didn't hear it, it isn't a problem.

There was a story that floated by on the forum...the owner, (it could have been Mark... or someone else)
was the only one who could hear the problem he had with his Estonia. As you can imagine, technicians attempting to rectify the problem experienced considerable difficulty with the adjustment, since they couldn't hear the problem.

I own a 2006 Estonia 190 and it developed the overtone issue on one string. The string was replaced under warranty and the problem was solved. Later Estonias have a lighter and faster action, but the price was considerably higher. I will say practicing on a heavier action (mine averages 59 grams downweight) seems to allow me to adjust to even the heaviest action.

Allegro Pianos does have a showroom in Stamford, CT. It's about an hour from Grand Central by train, shorter if you get an express train) but then you'll need Uber to get to the showroom. Ori's a great guy and that's who I bought my Estonia from.

It seems to hear a M&H you'll need to go to Massachusetts and visit the factory. Another brand comparable would be Schimmel and of course Yamaha's CF or SX series (but those seem hard to find).

Good luck.

That could be a reasonable price depending on the wear and tear. Mine’s a 2019 and it’s fabulous.
