Hi,

I am looking for a used upright piano (my first) and have come across a Kawai CX-21D 48" built in 1996. I have not been able to find any sort of history of Kawai model numbers - I would like to get an idea of where this model fell in their line at the time. Would it be the equivalent of their current K series professional uprights, i.e., the K-3? The piano was apparently purchased new by the seller, and has been played very little after a child took lessons for a year or two. He's asking $2700 - seem reasonable?

Thanks for your help,
Jim

Hi Jim,

I asked the forum before regarding CX-21D, we probably look at the same ad (it's a repost) \:\)

I found this Kawai history model number in eBay site:
http://reviews.ebay.com/KAWAI-Upright-Pianos_W0QQugidZ10000000001743009

Also, you can find some info in previous posts:

All in all, I would suggest you to use piano technician service to do inspection and give you estimate. It's really worth it. The cost is around half of the tuning cost.

(The reason is piano price really depends on the condition. The brand, year make, and model number only determine a certain "wide" range).

Good luck!

Thanks iryu. Based on these links, it seems like the CX-21D was in a line separate from the "professional" uprights. Maybe it's not comparable to a K series piano? It has the look of their current large uprights.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

I'm sorry I don't know about that for sure, KawaiDon might be able to help.

It is a budget conscious model (based on the info I got from previous post), so... I agree, maybe it's not comparable to K series.

Based on what I read in this forum, my suggestion would be, if all 3 conditions below apply, then it would be a good buy:

1. You like the sound and action.
2. The Piano Technician tells you that it's in an excellent condition and the price is right.
3. The Piano technician tells you that it still has let say "X" more years to go before it needs major restoration and this "X" number of years fits your long term plan for the piano.

Unless you want a better piano and your budget allows, then my suggestion above won't apply.

That's all I know \:\)
Hope this helps.

Iryu

Though the CX21D is 48" tall and manufactured in Japan,it was not their so to speak "artist model" back in 1996.The NS20A and it's successor the K50 was a better piano though they were more expensive. $2700 is an average deal in that the piano only retailed for under 5K and was obtainable brand new on the west coast for 3.5K ish depending on how greedy or desperate the dealer was at the time. ;\)
