I ran across a Baldwin SF-10 on Craigslist built in 1983-84. Before I contact the seller, are there any issues specific to that era of SF-10s I should be aware of? The seller posted the serial # if that would give any indication of possible problems. I’ll wait to post that since I’m not sure that’s appropriate for the forum.

Thank you in advance for your input.

The serial number would help verify its age.

I don't recall what year Baldwin started building their actions in Juarez, but it's not an issue in this case because the SF-10 should have a Renner action. So, if you like it, the usual advice applies: have it inspected.

For the record, I don't want to leave anyone with the impression that I would disregard the other action--some of which have issues--just have those inspected for potential issues too.

No nagging issues come to mind - these pianos are great instruments. I'd recommend having a tech look at it before buying. Things to check for include: Excessive action or hammer wear, Action regulation, Moisture damage, Soundboard and bridge cracks. It's a 30 year old piano, and it's condition could be anything from excellent to pretty worn. Only a technician will be able to say which it is.

Sometimes these era Baldwin grands can have failure in the glue joints between the soundboard and case. Also the bridges are prone to splitting in the area of the scale where the capo bar ends and the agraffes begin.

Thank you, Ed. If this turns out to be a piano I'm really interested in, I'll be sure to have a tech look at it first.

These were still nice instruments in this time frame, but their popularity faded in the '70's. Just remember, this is a BIG sounding piano.
