I would have found this piece very difficult to read or play a year and a half ago. It does get better, slowly but surely.

I hate when they notate swing rhythms like that. Just write eighth notes and tell me to swing it... The dotted eighth-sixteenth is so much harder to read IMO... Try Martha Meir's "Jazz, Rags, an Blues" series- lots of syncopation and swing. Book 1 is plenty challenging if you've been playing less than a year.

I don't know how many times I have looked at a piece of music and thought "wow this is going to be hard".....I work through them and they end up never being as hard as they appear.

But if you feel you are going to "grind" through it, you might as well just burn it. Regardless of what anyone tells you, each new piece you learn should be an enjoyable (for the most part) experience...oh and on that note, Don't bother learning a song you can't stand and are never going to play again.

Good word, grind. I hear a wonderful melody. So I acquire the music. And then realise its beyond my ability. ..way way beyond! But maybe not the first bit. .
So I keep going anyway, like an idiot. And then I record, and make you lot suffer!

Having said that, it seems to me that a combination of mental and physical "stimulation" (I use the word lightly) is probably good for ole fellas. Keeps ya busy. . .

Anyone agree?

I don't read it as directed to you. The reason it says "Re Swain" at the top is because peterws clicked the Reply button under your post rather than scrolling up somewhere else.

Besides, ole fellas are some of the best folks around.

Got me thinking, that word again. Yknow, life is a grind. Routine is the staple diet of everyone, pretty much, interspersed with a dollop of excitement now and again. Like, talking the scenic route to work. . or drinking something other than beer.
I rather enjoy grinding. I have a tool sharpening machine in the shed, its used constantly (sorry, neighbours but its quieter than that of the guy a few doors down)
And when I get on me bike. ..I head for the hills, and grind up em. Love it.
Poem comin up next. About. . . grin or maybe Ill put music to it and call it a song.
But it might get on yer nerves haha
