I am trying to research the difference between a Yamaha G5 and C5. I know the G5 is no longer made, but how much difference is there in the construction and sound, etc.?

The differences between the G5 and C5 are significant. They differ in scale design, rim materials, plate material, hammers and hammershanks, and soundboard grade. All advantages to the C series.

There are also several cosmetic differences such as a beveled edge on the C5 lid and inner rim finish.

So...if a C5 is a "10", where would the G5 be on the same scale? (No pun intended)

About a 7 or 8, assuming the same age and condition.

So (even if it's not an Apple G5,) if I pay $8500 for a G5 in primo shape, I'm getting a good deal? That's what I paid, so it's too late to change the deal. I knew it wasn't a C5 but it sure has to be better than my GH1 that I just sold, right?

So, Jason, does the same answer hold for any C & correspondingly sized G? I've gotten such conflicting answers from different techies on this!

The same answers apply to all G Series and C Series pianos EXCEPT the G1/C1 and G2/C2. The G1/C1 and G2/C2 are not significantly different.

A G5 is significantly better than a GH1. The difference is much greater than the difference between a G5 and a C5.

You did fine. Don't worry about it. Just find someone good to take care of it for you. That can make a greater difference than the difference between a G5 and a GH1.

I want to thank everyone who replied to my question. Believe it or not, I am one of the guys who can actually take care of my piano as well as play. I originally learned to tune when I was in college in the early 70's. There was an article in The Whole Earth Catalog about learning to tune and I bought the beginner's kit. I later apprenticed to a piano technician in France for about a year. (I was studying piano at a conservatory at the same time.) I know there are others who play and tune, and I would be interested in hearing their stories too. Having a big Yamaha in my home is a dream come true.
