In those days, more often than not it seems, computer technicians and other scientific persons were women. And nobody batted an eyelid, it was just accepted. Those were the days.

I think that a lot of computer work was thought to be "secretarial" at that time, so it was proper work for women to do.

The original computers, actually called computers, were rooms full of young women doing calculations on adding machines.

Yes, exactly. It's those words 'secretarial' and especially 'proper' that are so interesting here. In other words it is to do with how roles are understood and how status is attributed that is most important. Not the actual nature and demands of the work.

I really wonder what social justice warriors would have made of it, had they existed at the time.
