I took the plunge and brought the Kawai! Now I am waiting for the deilivery!

The piano will be in the high ceiling living room of the new house we brought three months ago. It has a slopped ceiling rising from 18 feet to maybe 21 feet opening to upstairs. The first time I saw the house, I knew the room is made for a grand piano. I am super excited about finally being able to put one in.

I would like to thank everyone who helped me in my other (my first) thread, and my husband, who worked as hard as me through the house upgrading process (even though he thought our old house was perfectly fine), and supported me during the piano hunt ( even though he is tone deaf and couldn't tell the difference between 5 feet and 6 feet grand pianos.)

I don't have a picture yet. Here is the layout drawing

My Kawai got home yestoday! I played it right after the mover left. After spending two hours on the road, it sounded very out of tune. Few hours later it recovered a lot and become bearable to my ears except few keys. This morning I found the tune further drifted. I guess it is still settling down to the environment.

I plan to keep the lid half open and put a string cover on it. I have three cats. Two of them like to use flat furniture surface as the fighting pit. They left long scratches on my dresser. A closed lid will be too attractive to them. I figured the string cover is going to protect the inside. But, will I risk a bent lid by keeping it popped up all the time?

we've always had cats coexisting with our grand. cat fur/hair/dander can be so fine, with the lid open most of the time, a string cover probably will not keep out 100% of the stuff from getting to the soundboard, even between the soundboard and iron plate. we close the piano when it's not in use, have a fitted to order, heavy padded cover to protect it from the claws (the cover was designed with cats in mind, and my feline buddy just showed up this moment to get a good morning rub). to avoid having a large, inert black object dominating the appearance of the room, we spread a couple of colorful weavings over it. with our cat, he might also take a fancy to tugging at a string cover with his claws, as well, and he hates the sound of it playing, so generally it's played when he's outside or sleeping in another room.

enjoy many years of music with your new piano. cheers.

Usually, when a piano is moved, you should wait about 2-4 weeks after delivery before getting a tuning (unless the seller of the piano included tuning with delivery). Changes in the climate surrounding the piano affect the tuning but largely work themselves out in a month's time.

One of my cats chews blankets, towels, socks, faux leather...basically any thick fabric. If I have to use a piano cover, it probably has to be spray all over with bitter apple.

I hate the idea of hiding the piano under a large cover. I am going to try the string cover first. If it doesn't work, I will have to make a bitter apple soaked cover.
