A friend showed me this really cool program he had on his Apple computer called iRehearse. By simply dragging and dropping an audio file into it, you can take a fast track and slow down the tempo without altering pitch so you can learn it more easily. Imagine doing this with a Peterson, Powell or Petrucianni tune.

He told me there is a Windows version, but that it's vulnerable to hackers. Has anyone used iRehearse for Windows, and if so, have you had any problems? Alternatively, has anyone used any other tempo shifting software for Windows?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

One example, amongst others, is the free audio program 'Audacity'.

I have Audacity. IIRC, the slow down alters the pitch, down an octave for half speed.

If you have a mobile phone, you can install "Music Speed Changer". It doesn't alter the pitch

Under the Effects tab in Audacity there is an option to Change Tempo without changing pitch.

For youtube videos you can click on the wheel and change the tempo to 50% without changing the pitch.

Thanks everyone. I've heard of Audacity, but didn't know it could do this. I'll have to check it out.

Another program is the Amazing Slow Downer. It does just that: you load in a tune and slow down the speed as much as you want, without changing pitch. You can also loop sections of a piece to listen over and over.

I'm using the ASD for many years with great success, my student downloaded it to iPad.

How to use the ASD:
1. Have it loaded on the same device that you have the files with the songs.
2. You open the program and then you open the file you want to work on.
3. The file is the song.
4. Once you open the song, it is really self-explanatory. There is a sliding bar and it will give you a percentage. In other words, slide it to 50% and you be at half speed.
5. It also has a starting and ending point which you only use if you want to work on a section of a piece. It goes by how many seconds into the track you want to start or end.

It really is a very easy to use program.

Audacity can do it but it's a bit cumbersome.

ASD is probably a better choice but I've never used it

However, Transcribe! is a great app for Windows / Mac / Linux. In addition to slowing down without altering the pitch, you can set markers, play loops, fine tune, etc. Great program; I have no interest in promoting it, just a happy camper. It's at seventhstring.com if I remember correctly.

6 .You can make transposition, without changing the tempo.
7.If the pitch is raised one octave up   the left hand can be heard better; if an octave down, the right. Similarly operates Mix button if recording is stereo.
8.Equalizer allows you to mute and highlight different areas of sound harmonics that allows to extract from polyphony the separate voice ,   and from voicing the individual note .
