I have always used standard clear tape for taping sheets together and it tears after a few weeks of folding and unfolding. Today as I was replacing some yet again, it occurred to me that maybe there is a different kind of more durable tape that could be folded hundreds of times without breaking. Anyone have any ideas?

I use this. It's a little stiffer than regular "Scotch" tape and thus the pages don't fold together flat quite so well, but I've never had it rip.

I`ve had sheets for 40 years without tearing. The tape just . . . leaves the paper on good terms, and they go their separate ways . . .

If you Google:

binding hinge tape

you'll get some serious options. I haven't tried them.

My teacher suggests using Scotch "Magic" tape, and _not_ running it full-length, along the edges of the pages.

Instead, put the pages side-by-side, with 1/16" between them, and run several strips of tape _across_ the join. I add cross-strips on the backside, too, so that there's no exposed adhesive.

Wow! Who knew there is a whole world of binding hinge tape. Obviously I need to get out more. Thanks, Charles.

One of my other hobbies is book-restoration.
First off, putting any kind of adhesive paste on paper is never good.
It only adheres to the top layer of paper fibres, which can easily tear/detach. It also loses its tack after a while, as the paper absorbs this into its core, leaving loose tape, and an unsightly yellowish line, that is virtually impossible to remove. Not an issue on a printed out score from imspl.org, but when I see it on a 400 year old book.....
PVA glue is probably your best solution, and is quick to dry.
Apply a thin strip to the left edge of a page, and place this behind the right edge of the page you are joining it to.
Now, while it is drying, place under something flat and heavy. With a sheet of celeophane, or wax/baking parchment to stop any spilled glue sticking to things you dont want stuck.
When dry, fold the right side sheet back over the edge of the left shhet, with a nice crisp fold.
That will hold for years.
