That is saying something, because I am blessed to be able to have basically anything I want on my sample account at any time. But choosing a piano to live with long term, is like choosing your spouse. You want to be sure. The FP-90 will serve me for years and years.

The FP-90 would be an incredible master keyboard for a rig. Traditional 5 pin DIN MIDI in and out. USB to Computer. Limitless polyphony for the Supernatural Modelled Piano Sound, and 384 notes for everything else. Polyphony wont be a problem now, or in the future. The PHA-50 feels outstanding, and the speaker system will fill any room I put it in at home.

Yes....I like the FP-90 a lot. I got to spend a few days with it in the Vancouver area last week, doing dealer demos. 100% positive feedback. And it will be (in Canada anyways) the same price as the FP-80 that preceded it. All good news.

Jay

How does the sound through the speakers compare with the HP603-LX17?
It looks very similar to the Kawai ES8. How does the FP-90 and the ES8 compare sonically?
I wish they would have put the Stick and S1-S2 buttons on it!

I wouldn't compare the speaker systems directly in any way. But...The FP-90 goes loud, and stays clear.

Haven't played an ES-8 so I have no way to compare.

I haven't played one yet but this is certainly my impression...it's ticking a lot of boxes.

Looks accurate to the best of my recollection.

The 1976SuitCase is a beautiful EP tone. Nice subtle stereo tremolo....the two Wurly tones are really nice too.

almost all the organs (that require it) have a really nice Leslie effect, and the last three have that vintage Farfisa transistor style tone. Super usable.

The strings are very good too.

Yup....the FP-90 is a winner in my books.

Hello Jay,

May I ask if the FP-90's EPs or organ sounds (including the Leslie effect) have been changed/improved since the FP-80?

Cheers,
James

Absolutely.

Some of the patch names I recognize from the FA and Integra series. They are super usable and much improved.

The leslie effect is more realistic to my ears, but I don't know specifics.

Having looked at the patch list for the FP90 it seems to share a great deal of patches with the HP603/ 605 LX7/17 as could be expected. There are however quite a few patches that appear on the FP90 not on the other models and vice versa.

Just curious as to why they changed the patches between the FP90 and the other four in some places as they seem to share the same sound engines and general spec otherwise. Could one or the other be considered to have the better patches outside of the 4 modelled pianos or is it just horses for courses?

Different intentions. An Hp or LX goes home. An FP-90 can be happy at home or on stage.

The FP-80 was extremely popular for use in live situations. The changes to the tones in the FP-90, make it a much better live instrument.

The Sliders feel very good. The EQ sliders have a detent at 0. not fiddly at all.

great stuff thanks Jay - my pre-order finger is hovering smile

really its only out of a FP-90 or a ES-8 - I've tried an ES-8 and was impressed

the Roland piano sounds fantastic from the demos online

one thing that always impresses me with the Kawai's- and this is in general from videos I've listened to on youtube of the Roland HP series etc vs the Kawai - is that the Kawai seem to do really well on Piano and Strings - they always sound very integrated - just the right about of decay/attack

hopefully the decay/and attack can be adjusted - 2 videos I found below LX-17 - ES8 - obviously different playing styles though. I know from the experimentation on my MOXF - getting the mix right can be very difficult - to avoid the "on-off" strings sound which becomes very distracting
