Hello all, so today I went to a piano dealership to look at some small grands (5'6 area) to upgrade from my upright. I went in to look at a petrof model 4 however, I found that it sounded metallic and piercing, and while I like that bright sound, it was too much. I was then directed to a brand new brodmann which I thoroughly enjoyed, the action and sound were great. My last stop was the piano I came to discuss with all you. The salesman was pressuring some so I'm not sure I have the straight story, it was a limited edition as he claimed, silver hardware 5'6" baldwin. It sounded and felt great and made me a deal of $16,800. I have never heard of silver hardware, so is this really a limited rare piano or just sales talk?
Thanks

Have you contacted Baldwin to ask them more about the silver stuff? Here is a link to where you can send them questions. Best of luck to you in your search!

Nickel or silver colored hardware is a more recent option on pianos of various price points. It's up to the dealer or customer to decide whether to order a piano that way, if that case hardware finish is possible. I doubt anything else about the piano is different.

More importantly, what did you think of the touch and tone of the piano?

Actually, not.

Baldwin did make a run of pianos with silver finishes. While they might run them again in the future is another question.

The nickle-plating provided a very nice option for certain decors.

Is the Baldwin a BP165? I would like to know more about your experience: action, tone, fit and finish. The price sounds good. I am not happy about Baldwin's shift to offshore manufacturing but have heard good things about the Parsons made grands.

About that Petrof "4", was it used or old new stock. The Petrof IV at 5'8" was a very popular piano. In 2009, Petrof changed their models and the closest is a 5'6" model called the Breeze it is hard to find new Petrofs in the US due to some poor marketing strategies by the maker and distributor.

Thanks for the help. As for the touch and tone, the touch felt better to me than the 2002 model 4 petrof but perhaps not as responsive as the brodmann. The piano sounded very good, i was amazed of the volume it projected from its size. All in all, if I could find a brodmann in my range, id probably go for that, it has more of the European sound. But, I'm not sure when petrof stopped using full renner actions but if I can find an older petrof with the full renner action, this will be a contender as well.

I agree, Renner action is absolutely amazing!

Apparently, Petrof grands come with a choice of a Petrof action or a Renner action, at least on the smaller models. Of course, that goes to availability on the showroom floor.

Don't limit your thinking to new pianos. Look at rebuilt and used as well, you often get more for your money that way.
