Thanks,
How are the X,Y and Z axis defined on the screen and what form is the input signal in?

Do you have some pictures of perfectly phased and in tune notes?

Ed,
i will upload more of those. But as a pro tuner you can do them easily yourself, the app is not that expensive smile works with other instruments as well btw.

x: signal
y: hilbert transform
z: intensity

Indeed! "Signal" and "Intensity" I can work with, but "Hilbert Transform": what the heck??

From my electronic education days, these are called Lissajous patterns and I had fun making them on the oscilloscope.

I assumed that as well, but I don't think the posted video actually fits the definition. I still use Lissajous patterns for teaching voice pitch matching. You require only an x and y axis, and two independent audio inputs.

The Hilbert transform takes a single input and produces and output, which in this case is fed to the second axis.

Are these trichord unisons or single strings? I hear a little bloom in some of them. What does it mean when it is a circle? Could this be used to teach someone what a clean unison "looks" like? What software produced this?

Thanks

It might be that with more thought, this kind of visualization could be extremely useful. I would be *happy* to be corrected, but right now, I fear the patterns might simply be "technoflash" based on the cursory explanations given above.

Mark,

these are trichord unisons. The bloom you hear are unisons not perfectly pure. The visualizations correspond with the bloom, so as you mentioned correctly, it can be used to teach what a clean unison looks like. That was the initial goal the software was designed for (and for voicing). One can also detect dead acoustic spots for recording, visualize tonal defects, string players can use it for tone training etc. There is more explanation in the description of the video. The software is an iOS App called "Unisono"

iPhone 5S is minimum. There are two possibilities:

a) Upgrading the device is one of them.

b) The second is to ask for a refund from Apple, you need to explain them that you were not aware of the device restrictions mentioned in the app store description.
