While that's a good clip, an even better, and much longer, exploration of how Steinways are made is the documentary "Note by Note."

What is that accent John Steinway has? I thought he grew up in New York, but that's quite a different accent. Is it from Boston or something?

Many regional accents are vanishing, probably because of mass communications.

Hi John
Yes I saw that one as well ^^
I liked the Making of a Steinway for the narration by John Steinway - though it's all very scripted, a little of the personality comes across.

Wow, is that so? It's so different to what you hear on TV shows based in Manhattan.

Some of his words make me think New York accent, but others don't. "Center" pronounced like "Centah." But his other articulation is so crisp that it sounds like something else.

In New York these days, they say you have to travel outside Manhattan to hear a New York accent. I'm in one of the outer boroughs (outta burrahs), and I hear it all the time.

You're all wrong. His speech is nothing like a so-called NY accent. JS's accent is completely characteristic of his age and social class. His parents gave their children a very gilt-edged upbringing.

John seemed to have a slightly different accent than Henry. But I have only heard John via recording and talked with Henry maybe 10 times. I have always thought the accent John had has similarities to Boston "Brahmin". I used the term "Manhattan" when I should have said Brahmin.

Boston sprang to mind when I heard it - not that I'm an expert on American accents. The Boston accent has a few similarities to our Australian accent.
